In the exhibition, 6 original works of Caravaggio and more than 50 original paintings by more than 40 artists of the "Baroque School" present a rare panorama of Baroque art. At the same time, the exhibition design that integrates Baroque architecture and first-class elements brings a dramatic viewing experience, allowing the audience to immerse themselves in the epoch-making and subversive aesthetic concepts brought by this art style.

The exhibition "Caravaggio and the Baroque Miracle" is produced by Shanghai Lujiazui (Group)**, co-organized by the Museum of Art Pudong and the Borghese Gallery in Rome, in collaboration with the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, the National Museum of Ancient Art in Rome, the Vicenza People's Bank and the private collector in Florence. The exhibition united with 5 institutions to collect 6 original Caravaggio paintings to Pumei in person, making this unprecedented "Baroque miracle" possible.
Michelangelo Merisi, widely known as Caravacgio, was one of the most revolutionary artists in the history of Western art, often considered the last great master of the Renaissance and the beginning of Baroque painting.
He rejected all academic rules, tirelessly searched for truth, used a distinct lighting style as a metaphor for divine grace, introduced a new style into painting, set off a new wave for European art after the Renaissance, and had a great influence on many artists of his time and later generations - the flamboyant Rubens, the deep and restrained Rembrandt, and the quiet Latour, all of whom were the heirs of his style.

Today, his works are in the collections of the Louvre, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Hermitage, the National Gallery, and many other world-renowned art institutions. In his 38 years of life, he left behind only a handful of surviving works, and the works available for loan and exhibition are extremely limited. In this exhibition, "The Boy with the Fruit Basket", which was unveiled for the first time in a domestic art museum, is from the collection of the Borghese Gallery in Rome and is an Italian national treasure. The Museum of Art Pudong also held a special unpacking ceremony on December 8.

The Boy with the Fruit Basket is one of Caravaggio's earlier works. The painting shows a three-quarter bust of a young man with a basket full of autumn leaves and fruits (such as apples and grapes). Light undoubtedly plays a major role in the work: it seeps out from behind the boy and is reflected on the basket, giving the fruit in the basket a variety of irregularities and imperfections. Caravaggio emphasized the importance of nature and always avoided aesthetic interpretations of natural objects, and the details of his paintings show his profound skill in studying the natural world through imitation.

The 17th century was an era of astronomical discoveries, domination, and the Counter-Reformation. The grandeur and intriguing style of the Baroque have resulted in a wonderful Baroque art. The word "baroque" derives from the Portuguese "barroco" and the Spanish "barrueco", which originally meant irregularly shaped, imperfectly round pearls – this is known in Italian as "scaramazza", meaning "river pearl". As a highly comprehensive art style, the germ of Baroque art first appeared in the field of architecture - artists began to break through the rules and regulations of classical columns, and focused on the organic architecture of architecture, the rhythm of life and the grandeur of spirit.

At that time, Rome was the center of the Baroque art wave, and as a vast space to be constructed, it attracted architects and artists from all over Italy. Many artists flocked from all over Europe to Xi the innovative styles of the masters of the time, while architects, decorators and craftsmen from all over the world built their own grand scenes. The wonderful fusion of different techniques such as painting, sculpture and architecture results in unique works of art that are breathtaking.

Born in Naples in 1598, Giovanni Lorenzo Bernini was a master of painting, sculpture and architecture. At a young age, he was involved in the design of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome, a very representative Baroque buildingAs a great painter, he revolutionized the tradition of portraiture and made great achievements. Among the paintings on display, "Self-Portrait of Maturity" is widely known for being printed on an Italian banknote worth 50,000 lire, which is also the pinnacle of Bernini's self-portrait and enjoys a high reputation.

* The Baroque era of the field is usually between the beginning of the 17th century and the middle of the 18th century, at the end of the Renaissance. In the Baroque period, the style was equally colorful. The Baroque at that time used the majestic tones of the court to glorify secular power, which also paved the way for the famous tradition of drama and opera. And the exhibition "Caravaggio and the Baroque Miracle" is also a tribute to ** art. In the exhibition hall, the audience will be immersed in the pleasure brought by the Baroque**.

The exhibition of the entire exhibition space is specially designed with the unique light and shade, color, and space layout concept of the baroque style. First of all, pay homage to Caravaggio in light – a master of using light and shade to create drama, Caravaggio made extensive use of dark colors to create shadow areas, and then used bright colors to accentuate the focal point of the canvas. He is like a director, using the spotlight to direct the viewer's gaze to the climax of the plot of the story in the painting, and the characters stand out from the dimly lit stage set. With this light and shadow, the rich emotions of the characters in the painting make the viewer outside the painting feel empathy. As visitors progress deeper into the exhibition, the lights dim in intensity until the last room showcases Caravaggio's work. Inspired by the fact that these works were originally viewed under candlelight, the brightness of the lights in the gallery would be very low, enhancing its theatricality and creating an immersive feeling for the viewer standing in front of Caravaggio's paintings.
Just as one of the main features of the Baroque was illusionism, artists of the time often used perspective to create stunning effects. The holistic curatorial and design of this exhibition is, to a certain extent, also a kind of "illusion" creation, inviting people to travel back to that Baroque era full of miracles, to explore, think, and re-appreciate the power of artistic communication and transcendence of borders.
