The development of any industry is inseparable from patents. From a national point of view, whoever has the most patent advantages in a certain field is the dominant player in that field.
With the United States unilaterally provoking the chip war, more and more people are beginning to pay attention to patent applications in the semiconductor industry. At present, the "2023 Semiconductor Patent Annual Report" has been released, and the number of patents in the United States is as high as 160,000, but what about China?
2023 Semiconductor Patent Report.
In the 50s of the 20th century, the American scientist Jack Kilby invented the first integrated circuit. The advent of this technology marked the beginning of the semiconductor industry and laid the foundation for the further development of semiconductor technology.
Since then, the United States has put more effort into the semiconductor industry, and several epoch-making chip companies such as Intel and NVIDIA have appeared in the United States, occupying the CPU and GPU markets. For more than half a century, the United States has adhered to openness and cooperation, and chips produced in the United States have been sold all over the world.
However, with the rapid development of China's semiconductor industry, even the United States has begun to worry that there are some restrictions, and many American companies are limited by the chip field and have to increase their independent research and development efforts, forcing more Chinese companies to accumulate patents. Now, what is the comparison between semiconductor patents in China and the United States?
According to Anaqua, 348,774 semiconductor patents will be filed worldwide in 2023, of which 162,557 will be filed in the United States, an 18% increase from the previous year.
In second place went to Japan, with 40 960 semiconductor patents; In third place, China has applied for 28 979 patents; In fourth place is South Korea, with 24 073 patents; In fifth place is Russia, with 13 905 patents filed.
The U.S. remains the world's leading country when it comes to semiconductor patent filing, with five of the world's top 10 companies being U.S. companies.
Semiconductor patent trends.
The semiconductor industry is growing rapidly and is highly competitive. Companies are constantly engaged in technological innovation and patent protection to maintain a competitive edge. This is the main reason for the increase in the number of patent applications for semiconductors.
U.S. policies and investments in the semiconductor industry, as well as China's goal of achieving 70% chip self-sufficiency, have also contributed to the growth in the number of semiconductor patent applications. Looking at current trends, the U.S. still dominates, with 160,000 patent applications. Patents are important, but they are not a panacea.
Just as Samsung ranks first in the world in semiconductor patent filings, TSMC has a 59% market share. Last year, China ranked only third in semiconductor patents, but it has already made significant progress.
For example, the Loongson 3A6000 developed by Loongson Zhongke is based on the self-developed Loongson architecture, while Huawei uses the advantages of the domestic ** chain to bring its own Kirin 9000 chip to the market.
The breakthrough of Chinese chips can lay a solid foundation for the industry, and with continuous accumulation, the future is bright.
