Tong Zixian pointed out that from the perspective of the ICT industry, in addition to the competitive relationship between Taiwan and Japan, 70% of them are complementary, upstream and downstream. For example, in the past, Sony was a customer of Pegatron and Asus, Pegatron used to manufacture digital cameras, Asus used to manufacture laptops, and other companies such as Toshiba, Nintendo, and Suntory were also important customers in Taiwan.
It is reported that in 2021, TSMC announced that it would go to Japan to build a joint venture with Sony and Denso Corporation to build a wafer factory, which will start construction in April 2022 and receive a subsidy of 476 billion yen from Japan. The Kumamoto plant has a planned monthly production capacity of 550,000 pieces, with a total investment of 11 trillion yen, the company is expected to produce 12 16nm and 22 28nm processes. At the beginning of February this year, TSMC announced the construction of a second wafer fab in Kumamoto, Japan, with an approval of no more than 52$6.2 billion in capital increase in JASSM. In addition, the project will receive investment from Toyota Motor Corporation, Sony, Denso and other companies.
Semiconductor industry experts believe that the Kumamoto plant will become an important base for TSMC to respond to customer geopolitics and the global layout of the first chain resilience needs.
