Fast Technology reported on February 21 that the U.S. Department of Commerce will provide $1.5 billion in direct subsidies to foundries Globalfoundries in accordance with the U.S. Chips and Science Act.

At the same time, the State of New York** in the United States has also issued more than $600 million in subsidies to Globalfoundries over the next 10 years.

As a result, Globalfoundries will receive a total of US$2.1 billion** in funding, or approximately RMB15.1 billion, to upgrade the Fab 8 fab in Malta, NY, and build a new fab there.

Globalfoundries will use the two factories to build more "Made in America" chips for industries such as artificial intelligence, automotive, aerospace, defense, and more, with a monthly production capacity of up to 8About 330,000 wafers.

Globalfoundries also announced that it will invest $12 billion over the next 10 years to upgrade its U.S. manufacturing base, which will create more than 1,500 manufacturing jobs and about 9,000 construction jobs.

Globalfoundries also has wafer fabs in Germany and Singapore, and it seems that there will be no major upgrades, after all, all this money is given by the United States to develop the American chip manufacturing industry.

However, since AMD spun off and became independent, Globalfoundries' advanced process research and development capabilities have become weaker and weaker, and in 2018, they gave up entering the 7nm process and stayed at their own 14nm.

At present, the most advanced process is only 12LP+, which can be regarded as 12nm, and the performance is close to that of the opponent 10nm.

But as more and more customers migrate to advanced process nodes such as 7nm and 5nm, Globalfoundries' position is starting to be a bit awkward.
