What are Japanese parents worried about?
Recently, the National Federation of University Cooperatives in Japan released a summary report of the "2023 Survey of Parents of New Students". The survey aims to assess parents' concerns about the costs involved between college entrance exams and admissions, any problems students may have between exams and admissions, as well as parents' concerns about college life and their evaluations of university companies.
The survey was conducted among parents of new students enrolled in the 2023 academic year from 137 universities, including 56 national universities, 29 public universities, and 52 private universities.
Features of the cost from entrance exams to admission
Contents of each expense item
The cost of the entrance exam to admission varies greatly depending on the university, major, or boarding school or not.
National public Live-in-home liberal arts schools have the lowest cost of 1,331,100 yen; Private schools, boarding schools, or medical dental and pharmacy schools have a maximum of 3,073,000 yen.
The cost of purchasing textbooks and teaching materials before entering the school was 234,400 yen (an increase of 15,200 yen from the previous year), and the cost of accommodation for the examination was 81,300 yen (an increase of 22,100 yen from the previous year). Since 2014, the cost of purchasing textbooks and teaching materials has increased year by year.
The examination fee, which accounts for the majority of the application fee, increased by about 6,000 yen from the previous year to 124,900 yen. The examination fee for private schools is 32,000 yen higher than that of national and public schools.
