The project address is located in Xiangshan Art Commune, Xihu District, Hangzhou, China. The art commune has been in a state of waiting for investment for many years after its completion. The project is occupied and operated by DXN Industries and Merchant Culture Group. The project includes the renovation of the building façade, landscape and interior space of 4 factory-shaped buildings. Four of the factory spaces were converted into temporary exhibition halls for contemporary art, while the ground floor space was transformed into art shops.
At the beginning of the project, we cooperated with Hangzhou Kaiwen Cultural and Creative *** to sort out the overall brand strategy of the art museum. As the space team, we initially provided a spatial translation strategy that combines the positioning of the museum and the brand symbol, including the design of spatial elements, narrative logic, combing of exhibition movements, and supplementation of logistics and transportation lines.
In order to balance the needs of brand output and the flexibility of the exhibition hall, we proposed a creative plan to extend the theme of "warehouse" to flow and polysemy materials, floating cabins, and a sci-fi atmosphere. In the interior design of the exhibition hall, we skillfully make use of the existing space conditions, and abstractly express the intention of "warehouse" through characteristic elements such as curved grilles and silver foil arc roofs. Inside, a giant mirrored capsule art installation was hoisted into the store, creating a wonderful, varied, and recognizable spatial experience. The entrance to the exhibition hall and the counters of the shops are made of a special metal rust process, reflecting its fluid and polysemoutic nature. During the architectural design process, we communicated with the original architectural design team many times to maintain the echo and implementation of the architectural space strategy. It was also an attempt by the architect to respond to the same site and superimpose the design ideas on multiple occasions. In terms of later operation and maintenance, the project has held dozens of art exhibitions, forums and salons, cultural and creative markets, creative activities, etc., becoming the "cultural engine" of Xiangshan Art Commune, and outputting unique cultural energy for the surrounding art colleges and the literary and artistic industries in Hangzhou.
Taking the opportunity of DXN Group's entry into Xiangshan Art Commune and the operation of a temporary exhibition hall and art store of contemporary art, Jiuzhang provided a space design that combined the needs of brand output and the flexibility of the exhibition hall, creatively proposing to extend the theme of "warehouse" into flowing and polysemoutic materials, floating cabins, and a sci-fi atmosphere. In the interior design of the exhibition hall, the existing space conditions are cleverly used, and the intention of "warehouse" is abstractly expressed through characteristic elements such as curved grilles and silver foil arc roofs. In the later stage of operation, the project has successfully held many art exhibitions, forums and salons, cultural and creative markets, creative activities, etc., becoming the "cultural engine" of Xiangshan Art Commune, and exporting unique cultural energy to the surrounding art colleges and Hangzhou's literary and artistic industries.
