Prysmian, a world-renowned cable company, recently announced that it has signed a mega contract worth up to 5 billion euros with German transmission operator Amprion. According to the terms of the contract, Prysmian will supply the required cables for the Balwin1 and Balwin2 offshore converter platforms and the DC34 underground cable project in Germany, involving a cable voltage level of 525kV DC, and the contract includes metal return cables and fiber optic cables, with a total length of 4,400 km, of which 3,400 km are terrestrial cables and the remaining 1,000 km are submarine cables.
It is understood that Balwin1 and Balwin2 are two high-voltage DC converter stations planned in the German North Sea, each station will bring together 2GW of offshore wind power projects in the surrounding area, and send out the rectified and boosted power. The DC34 underground cable is designed for offshore wind clusters, transporting electricity from Lower Saxony in northern Germany to North Rhine-West**, with a capacity of up to 2GW.
Prysmian became the preferred supplier for the three projects in November last year, with an order estimate of €4.5 billion at the time. The contract value increased by 500 million euros compared to expectations, once again demonstrating Prysmian's technical strength and market position in the cable sector.
