Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng was invited to deliver a speech at the Carter Center symposium to commemorate the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and the United States on the 9th local time, saying that differences and differences should not become an obstacle to Sino-US exchanges and cooperation. Country-to-nation competition should be athletics, not boxing.

Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng.

Xie Feng said that over the past 45 years, China-US relations have gone through ups and downs and forged ahead to become the most important bilateral relationship in the world today, which has not only enhanced the well-being of the two peoples, but also promoted peace, stability and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region and the world at large. Looking back over the past 45 years, the most fundamental experience is that cooperation between China and the United States will benefit both sides, and that cooperation is the only right choice for both sides. The broadest consensus is that China-US relations can only be good, not bad, and this is also the common expectation of the international community. The only correct way to get along is mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation.

Xie Feng pointed out that at present, Sino-US relations are once again standing at a new historical starting point. Let us stay true to our original aspirations, grasp the general trend, show foresight and courage, show a sense of responsibility and creativity, start from San Francisco, start from concrete things bit by bit, implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state to the letter, let the "San Francisco Vision" shine into reality, and continue to write the success story of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation between China and the United States.

Xie Feng said: First, we must abandon the Cold War mentality and establish a correct mutual understanding; Second, we must manage contradictions and differences and grasp the right direction of China-US relations; Third, we should focus on common interests and make dialogue and cooperation the main keynote; Fourth, it is necessary to remove roadblocks and promote a new upsurge of people-to-people exchanges.

Xie Feng pointed out that Sino-US relations have always been built on the basis of acknowledging each other's differences and respecting each other's core interests. Forty-five years ago, differences and differences did not hinder the establishment and development of China-US relations, and 45 years later, differences and differences should not become an obstacle to China-US exchanges and cooperation. Competition is widespread in modern society, but competition should be fair competition based on rules, and a healthy competition in which you catch up with each other and make progress together, not a vicious competition in which you play a zero-sum game, still less can we deprive other countries of their legitimate development rights and interests in the name of competition. Country-to-nation competition should be athletics, not boxing. If there is competition, it is a positive comparison to see who can govern their countries better and who can contribute stability and prosperity to the region and the world.

Xie Feng said that common interests are the driving force for China and the United States to reopen the door to exchanges, and they are also the driving force for bilateral relations to continue to move forward. Recently, China has taken a series of positive measures in the fields of economy and trade, cooperation in giant panda conservation, anti-narcotics, two militaries, climate change, and artificial intelligence, fully demonstrating its constructive stance of expanding opening-up and promoting China-US exchanges and cooperation. We hope that the US side will take concrete actions to address China's concerns in the same spirit. Don't take the good for nothing. We should make good use of the mechanisms restored or established in the fields of diplomacy, economy, finance, commerce, agriculture and other fields, constantly lengthen the list of cooperation and reduce the negative list, and be a problem solver rather than a troublemaker.

The seminar was jointly organized by the Carter Center, the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, the U.S.-China National Committee and the Center for American Studies at Fudan University, with speeches by Alexander Alexander, CEO of the Carter Center, U.S. Ambassador to China Burns, Chairman of the National Committee on U.S.-China Relations, and Allen, President of the U.S.-China National Committee, and more than 300 people from the U.S.-China strategic, academic, business and local sectors attended the seminar.
