Due to the disagreement between labor and management on the issue of wage increases, the ground staff of German airline Lufthansa will hold a strike at major German airports on Tuesday (February 20).
The strike action will begin at 4 a.m. on Tuesday (11 a.m. Singapore time) and end at 7:10 a.m. on Wednesday, according to a statement issued by the German Service Trades Union (Verdi, also known as Verdi).
The strike will affect seven airports, namely Frankfurt, Munich, Hamburg, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Stuttgart.
Nigmann, a member of Lufthansa's executive board responsible for human resources, expressed disappointment at the union's decision to call for a strike, saying it would be inconvenient for customers and employees.
A similar strike in early February led to the cancellation of 900 of the 1,000 flights, affecting about 100,000 passengers.
Regarding the salary negotiations, Nigman said Lufthansa made "broad" proposals during the negotiations, which were rejected by the union.
The union is demanding a 12 percent increase in the wages of 25,000 ground staff5%, or a monthly increase of at least €500 (about S$727) over 12 months and a one-off payment of €3,000 to offset inflation.
Germany has recently suffered a number of nationwide strikes that have affected air travel, rail, and public transport.
