Yes, this is the Buddhist story that has deeply touched countless Chinese sons and daughters for thousands of years, and even influenced the direction of Chinese civilization, and is known as the Buddhist story that has been praised through the ages - "Lixue Breaks Arm". This story, like a bright pearl, is embedded in the treasure of Chinese culture, and it shows us a spirit of perseverance and self-sacrifice with vivid language and profound connotation. It is like a melodious music, through the dust of time and space, and it still echoes in our ears today, inspiring us to pursue the truth and stick to our faith.

The second ancestor, Master Hui Ke (487-593, hereinafter referred to as Hui Ke Zen Master) for the convenience of description, is a common family surnamed Ji, and is a Tiger Prison person. Before the birth of Master Hui Ke, his father was often worried about having no children, and thought: "My family has respected good deeds for generations, will God still make me the last child?" So he prayed for the blessings of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas every day, hoping to have a son to inherit the ancestral business. After a while, I finally felt the light of the Buddha in the room at dusk, and soon the mother of Hui Ke Zen Master became pregnant, and then gave birth to a son. In order to thank the Buddha, after the birth of Zen Master Hui Ke, his parents named him "Light".

Hui Ke Zen Master has been ambitious since childhood, open-minded, well-read and memorized, widely involved in Confucian classics, especially proficient in the "Book of Songs" and "Book of Changes", for people like to travel in the mountains and rivers, and is not interested in running a family. Later, by chance, he came into contact with Buddhist scriptures, and deeply felt that "the teachings of Confucius Lao, the rules of etiquette, the book of Zhuang Yi, and the wonderful principles are not exhausted", so he began to inhabit Buddhism, transcend things, be contented, and have the idea of becoming a monk. Seeing that his ambition could not be changed, his parents had to agree to let him become a monk. Zen Master Hui Ke came to Longmen Xiangshan in Luoyang, followed Zen Master Baojing to learn Buddhism, and soon went to Yongmu Temple to receive full ordination. After that, he traveled to lecture halls all over the world to learn the teachings of Theravada Buddhism. After years of hard study, Zen Master Hui Ke has a full understanding of the scriptures, but personal life and death events are still a mystery to him.

At the age of thirty-two, Zen Master Hui Ke returned to Xiangshan, and gave up the practice of simply pursuing the knowledge of words in the past, and began to practice, meditating every day from morning to night, hoping to solve the problem of life and death with the power of meditation, and this has been the past eight years. One day, during his meditation, Zen Master Hui Ke suddenly saw a divine man standing in front of him and told him, "If you want to receive fruit, why should you stay in this evil?" The avenue is far away, and you are south! (If you want to attain the supreme realm, stop clinging to sitting here.) The avenue is not far away from you, if you go to the south and ask for it, you can get your wish! "Zen Master Hui Ke knew that it was ** God who was igniting him, so he changed his name to Shenguang. The next day, Hui Ke Zen Master felt an unbearable headache, like a steel needle stabbing, and Bao Jing Zen Master wanted to find a doctor**, at this time Hui Ke Zen Master heard a voice in the air and told him: "This is a rebirth, not an ordinary headache." Hui Ke told this information to Bao Jing, Bao Jing took a closer look, and sure enough, he saw that Hui Ke saw that the parietal bone of Hui Ke was like five peaks raised, so he said to Hui Ke Zen Master: "This is an auspicious appearance, you will definitely be enlightened." **God guides you to the south, clearly telling you that the current master of the Dharma temple facing the wall is your teacher! ”

Zen Master Hui Ke said goodbye to Zen Master Baojing, went all the way to Shaomu Mountain, came to the place where Patriarch Damo faced the wall, and served by him day and night. At first, Patriarch Bodhidharma only meditated on the wall, ignoring him at all, let alone teaching him. However, Zen Master Hui Ke was not discouraged, but became more and more respectful and pious in his heart, and inspired himself with the spirit of forgetting his body with the spirit of Gude for the law: "In the past, people sought the Tao, knocked the bones to extract the marrow, pierced the blood to relieve the hunger, covered the mud with cloth, and threw themselves into the cliff to feed the tiger." If Gu Shang is like this, who am I? Zen Master Hui Ke knew this, so he stayed outside the cave from morning to night every day, and did not dare to slack off.

After a period of time, on the ninth night of the lunar month of this year, the weather suddenly became cold, the cold wind was biting, and it snowed heavily. Zen Master Hui Ke was still standing there, motionless, and when it was almost dawn in the early hours of the next morning, the snow had not reached Zen Master Hui Ke's knees!

At this time, Patriarch Bodhidharma slowly turned his head, glanced at Zen Master Hui Ke, and asked, "What should you ask for in the snow for a long time?" (Why did you persist in the snow for so long?) )”

With tears in his eyes, Zen Master Hui Ke replied sadly: "May the monk be merciful, open the door of nectar, and have a wide range of products!" (I only ask the monks to have great mercy and open the door of nectar to all living beings in the world!) )”

Patriarch Bodhidharma said: "The Buddhas are supreme and wonderful, diligent in the wilderness, difficult to do, not to endure but to endure." How can you be petty and wise, light-hearted and slow-hearted, and want to take the true ride, but work hard in vain. (The supreme path taught by the Buddhas can only be attained if you practice diligently and diligently, do what ordinary people can't do, and endure what ordinary people can't endure.) How can a man of petty virtue and wisdom and a light-hearted and slow-hearted person attain it? If you are a little virtuous and wise, light-hearted and slow-hearted to seek a multiplication, it is just a fool's dream, and you are diligent and hardworking, and there is no result. )”

Hearing the teachings and encouragement of Patriarch Bodhidharma, in order to express his sincerity and determination to seek the Dharma, he picked up a sharp knife, cut off his left arm with a click, and put the broken arm in front of Patriarch Bodhidharma, and the blood spilled from the broken arm immediately stained the snow red.

Patriarch Bodhidharma was moved by the piety of Zen Master Hui Ke and knew that Zen Master Hui Ke was a ** instrument, so he said: "The Buddhas first sought the Tao, and forgot the form for the Dharma. (When the Buddhas first sought the Dharma, they all sacrificed their lives to seek the Dharma and forgot their bodies for the Dharma.) Now, in order to seek the Dharma, you cut off your arm in front of me, so that you can succeed in seeking the Dharma. )”

Bodhidharma Patriarch then changed its name, abandoning the name of Shenguang and changing it to Hui Ke.

Zen Master Hui Ke asked, "Can you smell the Dharma seals of the Buddhas?" ”

Patriarch Bodhidharma responded: "All the Dharma seals are obtained from others." ”

Zen Master Hui Ke was at a loss when he heard this, and said: "My heart is not restless, and I beg for the master and peace." ”

Patriarch Bodhidharma said, "Bring your heart to you." ”

Zen Master Hui Ke pondered for a long time, and then replied: "You can't get it if you find your heart." ”

Bodhidharma Patriarch Zhengse replied: "I am at peace with you! ”

When Zen Master Hui Ke heard the words of Patriarch Bodhidharma, he suddenly realized.

After Zen Master Hui Ke became enlightened, he continued to stay with Patriarch Bodhidharma for six years (or nine years), and then inherited the mantle of Patriarch Bodhidharma and became the second ancestor of Zen Buddhism in Middle Earth.

According to the historical records of Zen Buddhism, after the second ancestor Hui Ke Zen Master paid the Dharma to the second ancestor Master Sangcan, he went to Yedu, Taoguang Yanghui, changed the shape of the instrument, said the Dharma with the suitability, or entered the wine shop, or passed through the slaughterhouse, or talked on the street, or followed the servants, and the four people took refuge, as long as 34 years. Someone once asked Zen Master Hui Ke: "The teacher is a Taoist, why is this so?" (*If you are a monk and a monk has the precepts of a monk, why do you go in and out of these unclean places?) Zen Master Hui Ke replied, "I adjust my mind, what does it matter to you?" (What does it have to do with you that I observe and adjust my own mind?) )”

Hui Ke Zen Master is good at rhetoric, although he has no intention of promoting Zen Buddhism, but the number of people who know Hui Ke Zen Master is increasing, as the influence expands day by day, Hui Ke Zen Master's Dharma propagation activities were attacked by the monks who were guarding ** at that time. At that time, there was a master named Bianhe, who explained the "Nirvana Sutra" in the temple, and some of the apprentices had heard of Hui Ke Zen Master**, so they gradually left the chair and followed Hui Ke Zen Master to learn the ancestor Zen. Venerable Bianhe was very angry and slandered Hui Ke in front of the Chief Executive, saying that he was lying to confuse the public. The chief listened to the slander, ** Hui Ke Zen Master. Zen Master Hui Ke accepted it with ease and without complaint. According to the record of the lamp, Hui Ke Zen Master lived for seven years, and Emperor Wen of Sui died in the thirteenth year of his reign, and he was called the Great Ancestor Zen Master.
