Middle class anxieties The gap between the lack of means of production and generational expectations

In today's society, the anxiety of the middle class seems to be deepening. Most of what they have is a stable career and a relatively comfortable life in exchange for personal efforts and talents. Behind this, however, lies a deep sense of insecurity, the core of which is the lack of means of production.

The middle class often earns income by providing professional skills or knowledge services, and many of them excel in fields such as finance, law, healthcare, education, etc. However, unlike those who own physical businesses or large amounts of assets, the middle class rarely has direct control over the means of production, such as land, plants, equipment, etc. This means that their wealth accumulation is more dependent on personal career development and market volatility than on stable asset returns.

This lack of means of production not only affects the economic security of the middle class, but also shapes their concept of children's education to a large extent. As they themselves reach the middle class through education and hard work, they often have high expectations for their children's education, hoping to ensure that their children can maintain or exceed their current social status through high-quality educational resources.

However, the reality is often not the same. Although the middle class is willing to invest a lot of time and money in education, children's achievement is often influenced by a variety of factors, including personal interests, talents, social circumstances, etc. This has left many middle-class parents feeling great stress and frustration when it comes to their children's education.

In contrast, the wealthy, who own the means of production, have more choice and more room for manoeuvre. Their wealth can provide their children with a diverse educational path and a broader space for development, without having to rely too much on a single career path or market opportunity. Even if a child suffers a setback in their school or career, they can provide support and security with the assets and resources they already have.

On the other hand, the groups at the bottom of the society are often forced to pay enough attention to and support their children's education. Their daily lives revolve more around survival and the satisfaction of basic needs, leaving little room for long-term educational planning or investment.

Therefore, the anxiety of the middle class is not only a sense of economic insecurity, but also a deep anxiety about the future of their children. In the absence of means of production, they can only try to maintain or improve their existing social status through continuous efforts and inputs, but this process is full of uncertainties and challenges. And this anxiety and stress also invisibly affect their quality of life and happiness.

To address this anxiety of the middle class, society needs to distribute educational resources and career opportunities more equitably, while providing the middle class with more channels for asset appreciation and wealth accumulation. Only in this way can they really relieve their stress and give them confidence in the future.
