Consumer goods giant Kraft Heinz has partnered with energy developers to launch a 20MW green hydrogen production project at Kraft Heinz Vigan plant. The project aims to produce hydrogen through water electrolysis from 100% renewable electricity.

The hydrogen is planned to be used to replace fossil fuels in the heating process at the Kitt Green plant. Kraft Heinz estimates that the project will meet more than half of the plant's natural gas needs and is expected to reduce related carbon emissions by 16,000 tons per year.

Kraft Heinz is committed to achieving global net-zero emissions by 2050 and has set an interim target of halving all emissions between 2021 and 2030.

The start-up of the project is dependent on planning approval and financing. Over the next 18 months, Kraft Heinz and Carleton Energy will commit to applying for planning permission and securing financial support through a second round of funding for the UK's hydrogen production business model.

Trafford City Council Leader and Head of Greater Manchester's Green City Region, CLLLR Tom Ross highlighted the important role of business and organisation in the transition to sustainable energy, praising Kraft Heinz and Carleton Energy for working together to advance Greater Manchester's net-zero emissions targets.

The UK** aims to achieve 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen production capacity by 2030, at least half of which should be green and renewable hydrogen. In addition, other projects will need to meet the stringent life cycle emissions criteria of the Low Carbon Hydrogen Standard in order to be eligible for funding.
