On August 30, 1985, the former Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications of the People's Republic of China issued a set of J115 "The 200th Anniversary of the Birth of Lin Zexu" (hereinafter referred to as "J115 Lin Zexu") to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Lin Zexu.

This set of stamps is a full set of 2 stamps, the whole stamp is designed by stamp designer Ren Yu.

The main design of the first J115 (2-1) stamp is a portrait of Lin Zexu in the collection of the Museum of the Chinese Revolution, and the background of the picture is two lines of poetry in Lin Zexu's "Going to the Chengkou Occupation of the Family" transcribed by the famous patriot and sociologist Fei Xiaotong: "If the country lives and dies for profit, will it not be avoided because of misfortune and fortune!".”。It means that if it is related to the life and death of the country, how can it be blessed because of personal gains and losses?

The second piece of J115 (2-2) is a Humen smoke relief that shows the main events and exploits of Lin Zexu's life. The relief works are by the famous sculptor Zeng Zhushao.

Lin Zexu (August 30, 1785, November 22, 1850), the character Yuan Fu, also known as Shaomu, Shi Lin, the late name of the old man of Tong Village, the retreat of Tong Village, the retreat of Seventy-two Peaks, the Bottle Spring Residence, the Quercus Society Sanren, etc., was a native of Houguan County, Fujian, a politician, writer, thinker, and national hero in the late Qing Dynasty of China.

Lin Zexu served as an official of 14 provinces, including Hanlin Editing, Zhejiang Hangjiahu Road, Jiangsu Inspectorate, Donghe Governor, Jiangsu Governor, and Huguang Governor.

Lin Zexu supervised the Yellow River in the Yulu Plain, dredged the Baimao and Liuhe rivers in the Yangtze River Delta, diligently repaired water conservancy, and established political deeds. The greatest achievement of his life was that he led and practiced the anti-smoking and anti-British struggle against the aggression of foreign powers. In order to maintain his rule, Emperor Daoguang accepted Lin Zexu's proposal, and in December 1838, he appointed Lin to go to Guangdong as a minister and confiscate opium in Humen and destroy it, which is the famous "Humen Tobacco Sale" movement in history, which was also the fuse of the First Opium War.

The sale of tobacco in Humen has greatly increased the ambition of the Chinese people, safeguarded the interests and dignity of the Chinese nation, and opened the prelude to the anti-colonial struggle of the Chinese people in modern times. In June 1840, the First Opium War officially broke out. On August 29, 1842, the Qing court was forced to sign the Treaty of Nanking with the British invaders. Lin Zexu was dismissed from his post and investigated, and he was assigned to Xinjiang Yili.

In the twenty-fifth year of Daoguang (1845), he was reactivated by the imperial court, and successively served as the governor of Shaanxi and Gansu, the governor of Shaanxi, and the governor of Yunnan and Guizhou. In the thirtieth year of Daoguang (1850), Lin Zexu was again appointed as the minister of the Qincha, and died of illness in Puning, Chaozhou, on the way to suppress the uprising of the Worship of God. He was given the title of Prince Taifu and nicknamed "Wenzhong".

Lin Zexu's life has really been as in his poem"If the country lives and dies for profit, will it not be avoided because of good and evil? "It shows Lin Zexu's lofty spiritual realm of putting the interests of the country first and sacrificing everything personally.

Fei Xiaotong (November 2, 1910 April 24, 2005), a native of Wujiang, Jiangsu Province (now Wujiang District, Suzhou), is a famous contemporary sociologist, anthropologist, ethnologist, social activist, and one of the founders of Chinese sociology and anthropology.

"Selling Tobacco in Humen" can be said to be the most important sculpture work in Zeng Zhushao's sculpture career, which has accumulated valuable experience and examples for the subsequent urban sculpture in the design of monumental sculptures dealing with major historical themes.

The relief in J115 Lin Zexu (2-2) is the relief of "Humen Selling Tobacco", which is the most representative work of Zeng Zhushao, which can be called an epic work. It is the first of ten large reliefs on the stele pedestal of the People's Heroes Monument, showing the historical event of the destruction of opium in Humen, Guangdong Province in 1839, the original work is 200 cm and 492 cm, its design and shaping techniques are realistic, absorbing and using traditional Chinese carving techniques, and the style of expression pays attention to the appreciation habits of the nation, with the characteristics of overall refinement, delicate portrayal, simplicity and freshness.

Due to the fact that the base of the Monument to the People's Heroes was created in relief. Among them, the relief "Humen Selling Cigarettes" was drafted by Zeng Zhushao. After the subject matter was decided, he began to shape a quarter of the sketches, visited and collected image materials, and at the same time began to investigate and study the stones, and decided on the mining work. In order to gain more creative time, the scheme of first building the stele base and installing the stone relief was adopted.

In the process of creation, not only will the manuscript be submitted to the higher authorities for approval, but also the manuscript will be displayed in Beihai Park to listen to the opinions of the masses.

In order to better reflect the characteristics of traditional Chinese culture in the creation, Zeng Zhushao and his team conducted investigation, analysis and research in major grottoes in China, and finally determined the style of the monument works, that is, the relief figures are appropriately proportioned, the scenes are magnificent, vivid and lively, and the performance content is profoundIt is more harmonious with the square building in terms of color, proportion and volume, and has become an image carrier for paying tribute to the heroes and martyrs and remembering the history.

This set of J115"Lin Zexu. "The commemorative stamps not only contain the inscription of the famous Fei Xiaotong copying Lin Zexu's poems, but also the relief works of the famous sculptor Zeng Zhushao, which are completely consistent with the image and temperament of Lin Zexu, a national hero, and its commemorative significance is extraordinary.

The "Humen Tobacco Sale" led by the national hero Lin Zexu is an unprecedented feat in human history. The victory of the anti-smoking campaign was the first great victory in the history of the Chinese people's struggle against aggression, safeguarded the dignity and interests of the Chinese nation, and proclaimed to the whole world the determination of the Chinese nation not to succumb to aggression.
