South Korea formally established diplomatic relations with Cuba.
Yonhap News Agency reported that South Korea and Cuba established formal diplomatic relations in New York on Wednesday (February 14) Eastern time. The representatives of the two countries to the United Nations exchanged instruments for the establishment of diplomatic relations.
Cuba recognized South Korea in 1949 and established diplomatic relations with it, but the two countries severed diplomatic relations after the Cuban Socialist Revolution in 1959. However, since the beginning of the 21st century, with the increase of economic and cultural exchanges, the atmosphere between the two countries has changed, and the diplomatic authorities have taken turns to personally propose the establishment of diplomatic relations and the establishment of consular relations.
South Korea's "North Korea" said in June last year that it had confirmed that South Korea was re-promoting the establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba, and the two sides were advancing the plan of holding a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries as an opportunity to hold a meeting between the foreign ministers of the two countries as an opportunity to hold a meeting in New York.
The report also said that Cuba is a long-term friendly country that established diplomatic relations with the DPRK in 1960, and if it successfully establishes diplomatic relations with the ROK, it will be of great significance and will further strengthen its diplomatic isolation from the DPRK in the international arena.
Yonhap News Agency reported that South Korea said on Wednesday that through the establishment of diplomatic relations with Cuba, the two countries are expected to expand economic cooperation, lay an institutional foundation for South Korean companies to enter Cuba, and then promote the deepening of substantive cooperation between the two countries.
South Korea has also indicated that after the establishment of diplomatic relations, South Korea can provide systematic consular assistance to citizens visiting Cuba. In the future, the two countries will actively discuss follow-up measures for the establishment of diplomatic relations, such as the establishment of permanent diplomatic missions in each other.
