Year of the Dragon**The translation of "Dragon" is a pleasure. My experience is that it is not enough to translate "dragon" in two ways that are either long or dragon.
And there is actually more than one transliteration. In August 1977, the relevant United Nations conference adopted a resolution to replace the Roman alphabet spelling of Chinese geographical names with Hanyu Pinyin. According to this, the vast majority of people in China that contain the word "dragon" (Zhao Zilong, Ma Long, Long Xiaoming, etc.) and place names (Longyan, Longshan, Longmen, etc.) can be transliterated as long or long. However, there are two scenarios to be aware of. Although the Weituma pinyin method, which has been prevalent for about 100 years, has been replaced by the Chinese pinyin transliteration method of personal names and place names, the old spelling still exists in the early years of publications and other media, so it is necessary to understand that the Weituma spelling of Heilongjiang (heilongjiang is also the name of the province and the name of the river) is heilungkiang. Some things can be directly transliterated, such as longjing (tea) called longjing (tea) (can also be translated as dragon well tea), but longan and oolong tea have long been translated by foreigners into longan and oolong respectively according to their Cantonese pronunciation (not Chinese pinyin wulong). The transliterated name of the Dulong ethnic minority in China is not dulong, but a unique derung.
Literal translation: see dragon in the literal sense of the word, and translate into dragon. Based on this, the Year of the Dragon, the Dragon Palace, the Dragon Lantern, the Dragon Vein, and the "Dragon" in the Dragon Boat Tune (Hunan Folk Song) can all be translated as dragon equally. If you translate the original meaning of many four-character idioms such as "Finishing Touch", "Dragon Teng Tiger Leap", "Raw Dragon and Living Tiger", "Dragon and Phoenix Chengxiang", then use dragon to literally translate the word "dragon" (if you translate the metaphor of these idioms, you need to follow the paraphrase method). Because of the focus on the title, the translators used dragon to make a literal translation of the "dragon" in the film "Dragon Fist", "Young Master Dragon", "Raptors Crossing the River", "Dragon Gate Inn" and "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon".
Paraphrasing must translate the meaning beyond the words. This translation requires the translation of "dragon" according to the metaphorical meaning, extra-verbal meaning, or extra-string sound of the Chinese word. "Dragon with dragon, phoenix with phoenix" is a metaphor for the marriage of men and women to pay attention to the right match, which is translated as let beggars match with beggars (let beggars match beggars) is the most expressive. If you realize that a one-stop service is a package or a one-stop service, paraphrasing is a breeze. Jackie Chan, busy traffic, and dragon gate arrays must be translated. In the face of titles such as "Royal Dragon" and "Flying Dragon Rebirth", the translator did not translate the word "dragon" literally, but paraphrased it with reference to the plot. Asymmetry is necessary. For example, when translating the pigeon pair, we have to replace the "dragon and phoenix" with another asymmetrical animal, pigeon, because Western folklore believes that pigeons usually lay two eggs at a time, one female and one male.
Magic translation is also not to be overlooked. This is a translation of turning no dragon into a dragon and a dragon into no dragon like magic. In the first case, there is no "dragon" in Chinese expressions, and the word "dragon" must be conjured up when translated into English. For example, the Dragon Boat Festival in China should be translated as Dragon Boat Festival. Dragonflies also have dragons in English. Kirin is a red resin produced in Malaysia and other places, translated into English (dragon's blood), the dragon immediately appeared. The second situation is that there is "dragon" in Chinese and no "dragon" in English. Kung fu movie duo Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan (stage names) should not be transliterated as Li Xiaolong and Cheng Long, but should be switched to their English names Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan.
