Chapter 4: Lost Feet
Just then, it was starting to get dark, and Pinocchio suddenly remembered that he hadn't eaten anything yet. His stomach was rumbling, criing out for something to eat.
Children are like that, when they think of eating, they want to eat more and more. This is not an exaggeration, it only takes a few minutes for the feeling of wanting to eat to turn into hunger. Pinocchio's stomach was now getting hungrier and hungrier, hungry like a hungry wolf, hungry like a knife.
Poor Pinocchio immediately threw himself at the fireplace, for he saw a pot steaming there. He was about to lift the lid of the pot to see what was boiling inside, and who knows, the pot was actually painted on the wall! You can imagine how disappointed Pinocchio must have been, his nose, which was already long, was about to grow at least four fingers.
So, Pinocchio began to run around the house. He searched all the drawers, all the nooks and crannies, just thinking of finding a little bread, even a little rusk, a hard crust, a dog gnawed bone, a moldy corn paste, a fish bone, a cherry pit, ......All in all, just whatever can be imported. But he found nothing, not a single thing to eat.
At this time, his stomach was getting hungrier and hungrier, and ...... hunger was getting hungrier and hungrierPoor Pinocchio, as much as he wanted to make his stomach feel better, there was nothing he could do but yawn. His yawns were so long, and every time he yawned, his mouth grinned to his ears. After every yawn, he spat out once.
Gradually, he felt like his stomach was about to vomit.
In the end, Pinocchio was in despair, and he cried and said:
The talking cricket is right. I made the mistake of not listening to my father and running out of ......the houseIf my dad were here, I wouldn't yawn and sit here and die! Alas! I'm so hungry! ”
Just then, he saw a pile of garbage that seemed to have a round, white thing, like an egg. Pinocchio hurriedly jumped over and pounced on it to take a look. Oh, it's an egg!
The puppet's joy at discovering the egg was indescribable, and he felt like he was in a dream! He held the egg in his hand vigorously, turning it over and over again, touching and kissing. He kissed the egg and said:
Now how am I going to eat this egg? How about frying it? ......No, it's better to cook it on a plate! ......Oh, and it's better to fry in a frying pan, is there anything better than fried eggs? Well, doesn't it seem like a good thing to eat raw? No, it's better to cook it on a plate, or fry it in a frying pan ......Ah, I want to eat to death! ”
As soon as he said it, Pinocchio placed the frying pan on a charcoal-burning brazier, in which he put neither vegetable oil nor butter, but water. Wait until the water is steaming hot, and it clicks ......He broke the shell of the egg and was about to pour the egg into it.
But what he didn't expect was that instead of the egg white and yolk, a chick poured out of the eggshell! The chick was merry and polite, bowed to him gracefully and said:
Thank you, Mr. Pinocchio, for saving me a lot of effort and not having to break the eggshell myself! Goodbye, have a great day, and please greet your family on my behalf! ”
After saying that, the chick flapped its wings and flew out of the open window at once, and disappeared.
The poor puppet stood there and froze. His eyes widened, his mouth opened wide, and he was still holding the two eggshells in his hands, so he was stunned for a while. When he first came to his senses, despair and hunger made him cry again. Pinocchio stamped his feet in anger, and he said while crying
Still talking crickets are right! If I hadn't run out of the house, if my dad was still here, I wouldn't be starving! Oh, I'm so hungry! ”
Pinocchio's stomach was still rumbling, and it was getting louder and louder. He didn't know what to do to make his stomach scream. He decided to leave the house and visit the village next door. Perhaps, he will meet a kind person there who will give him some bread to eat.
This winter night is terrifying, though. The whole sky was lightning and thunder, as if it was on fire, and the icy wind swept the billowing dust, blowing the trees in the fields with a rustle.
Pinocchio was most afraid of thunder and lightning, but now hunger was more terrible for him than thunder and lightning. So he closed the door of his house, ran out, and jumped up and down to a nearby village. By the time he reached the village, he was out of breath, and his tongue was sticking out, like a hound.
At this time, the village was pitch black, and there was no one in the village. The doors of the shops were closed, the doors and windows of every house were closed, there was not even a single dog on the street, and the whole village was like dead.
Desperate and hungry, Pinocchio tries to ring the doorbell of a house. He jingled and rang, muttering to himself:
Somebody will always look outside. ”
After a while, someone opened the window and looked down. It was an old man, wearing a nightcap, and he exclaimed in a huff
Who is it? What do you want to do in the middle of the night? ”
Can you do a good deed and give me some bread? ”
Wait, I'll come down. The old man pretended to answer, but in his heart he wondered which little villain he had encountered, and he came to joke in the middle of the night. They were sleeping well, but he came to pull the doorbell and play tricks on himself, the old man.
Half a minute later, the window opened again, and it was the same old man, who called out to Pinocchio
You stand underneath and take your hat up. ”
Pinocchio didn't have a hat. He immediately walked under the window, and suddenly, a large basin of cold water poured down. Pinocchio was like a pot of withered geraniums, drenched from head to toe by water.
Pinocchio returned home like a chicken in soup, and he was tired and hungry at this time, and had no strength at all. So he sat down and rested his two wet, dirty, muddy feet on the charcoal brazier.
And so he fell asleep, and while he was asleep, his wooden feet were burned by the fire, and little by little they were burned into coals and ashes.
Pinocchio just snorted and fell asleep. He snored as if the feet were not his, but someone else's. It wasn't until dawn that he woke up at once, because he heard a knock at the door.
Who? He asked, wiping his eyes.
It's me. A familiar voice replied.

This is the voice of Geppetto.
Poor Pinocchio was sleepy-eyed, and he didn't notice that his feet were completely burned. As soon as he heard his father's voice, he jumped down from his stool to open the door, but he shook his body two or three times, and then fell straight to the floor.
He fell to the floor with a thud that sounded like a sack of wooden spoons falling from five floors.
Open the door for me! Jeppetto was still shouting in the street outside.
My dad, me, I can't open the door. The puppet replied that he was rolling on the ground and crying.
Why can't you open it? ”
Because ......Because both of my feet were eaten. ”
Eaten by what? ”
by cats. Pinocchio said. Because at this time he happened to see a cat in the house, playing with the shavings on the ground with his front feet.
Alright, open the door for me! "If you don't open the door again, I'll come into the house and give you a 'cat'!" ”
But, I can't stand up ......Trust me. Oh, I'm pathetic, I'm pathetic! Looks like I'm going to have to walk on my knees for the rest of my life......”
Geppetto heard the puppet crying and screaming, and thought he was playing tricks again, so he crawled through the window into the house, intending to clean up the little ghost.
At first, Geppetto really wanted to scold him and beat him, but when he saw the puppet lying on the ground and really had no feet, his heart immediately softened again. He hurriedly put his arms around Pinocchio's neck, took him in his arms, stroked him a thousand times, coaxed him a thousand times, and big tears flowed down his cheeks. Geppetto cried and said
My good Pinocchio! How did your feet get burned? ”
I don't know, Dad. Believe me, it was a terrible winter night that I will never forget! There was thunder and lightning, and my stomach was so hungry that there was a cricket that could only speak, and said to me, 'You deserve it, you are not good, you are self-inflicted.' I said to him, 'Be careful, cricket!' ......Then it said to me, 'You're a puppet, you've got a wooden head.' So I grabbed a wooden mallet and threw it at it, and it was ...... deadIt's all its own fault, and I don't want to kill it. Then I put the frying pan on the charcoal fire in the brazier, but the chick came out and said, 'Goodbye......Greetings to your family on my behalf. But my stomach was getting hungrier, so the old man with his nightcap poked his head out of the window and said to me, 'Stand down there, take your hat.' Then I got a basin of water on my head......I can't figure it out, there's no shame in begging for bread, right? Then I went home. I'm starving. I rested my feet on the brazier and dried them. Then you came back, and my feet burned out. I'm still hungry. But my feet are gone! Wow......Wow......Wow......Wow......”
Poor Pinocchio began to cry as he spoke. He cried so loudly that he could hear him five kilometers away.
Geppetto listened to him for a long time, but understood only one thing, that is, the child was starving to death. So he took out three pears from his pocket, handed them to him, and said:
These three pears were meant to be eaten for breakfast, but I'm glad I gave them to you. Eat it, eat the pear and you'll be fine. ”
If you do give it to me, please peel it off. ”
Peel? Geppetto was amazed and said, "I can't believe it, my child, why are you so cunning?" It's not good that you're so hard to serve! In this world, you have to get used to eating everything, and you can eat whatever you know how to give! Because you can never know what will happen to you later, ...... anything can happen”
You're right," Pinocchio said, "but I don't want to eat fruit that doesn't peel it, I can't stand it." ”
Geppetto is a good Samaritan. He took out a knife and, with angelic patience, peeled three pears, and then placed the pear peels on the corner of the table.
Pinocchio ate the first pear in just two bites. Just as he was about to throw the pear heart away, Geppetto hurriedly stopped his hand and said to him:
Don't rush to throw it away. In this world, everything will be useful. ”
Seriously, I don't want to eat pear hearts! ......The puppet writhed around and shouted coquettishly.
Who knows! Anything can happen ......Geppetto was not angry, and said the truth again.
In this way, none of the three pear hearts were thrown out of the window. Geppetto placed them on the corner of the table, along with the pear skin.
Pinocchio quickly ate three pears, or rather, to be more accurate, swallowed three pears. He let out a long yawn, then cried again
I'm hungry again! ”
Oh, my child, but I don't have anything left for you. ”
Without? Is there really none? ”
All that's left is the pear peel and the heart. ”
No way," said Pinocchio, "if I don't have anything else to eat, I'll eat a piece of pear skin." ”
So, he chewed the pear skin. At first, he reluctantly ate with his mouth crooked, but in the blink of an eye, he ate all the pear skins piece by piece. After eating the pear peel, he began to eat the pear heart again. When he had eaten it all, he patted his stomach with satisfaction and said happily
Well, I feel a lot better now! ”
You see," Geppetto said to him, "I was right when I told you. You have to learn not to be too picky, not to be too talkative, my child. In this world, we never know what will happen to us in the future. Anything can happen! ”
