Everton's 10 points in the Premier League were reduced to six after a successful appeal.
Back in November, Everton were penalised for breaching the Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. After picking up four points, they climbed again to 15th in the Premier League table, ahead of Brentford and Nottingham Forest.
A statement from Everton FC read: "Everton can confirm that the Appeal Committee has concluded that the demerit imposed by the independent Premier League Commission in November has been reduced from 10 to six with immediate effect.
While the club is still digesting the decision of the Appeal Board, we are pleased that our appeal has reduced the points sanction. "We understand that the Appeal Board, in its assessment based on the available benchmarks informed by the clubs to the Commission, found that the 10-point deduction initially imposed was inappropriate, including the situation under the relevant EFL regulations, and the 9-point deduction imposed under the Premier League's own rules in the event of insolvency.
The Club is also particularly pleased with the Appeal Board's decision to overturn the original Board's decision that the Club had failed to act in the best faith. This decision, along with the reduction of demerit points, is an extremely important principle for the club in its appeal. Therefore, the club believes that the appeal is correct. ”。
Despite the decision of the Appeal Board and the positive outcome, the club remains fully committed to cooperating with the Premier League in relation to the ongoing litigation for the accounting period ending in June 2023. "The club is still considering the wider implications of this decision and will not comment further at this time, just put it on record and thank our Supporters' Advisory Committee and other fan groups for their support and patience throughout this process, and thank all Evertonians for their continued support and patience. ”
Everton was judged to have lost more than the standard 10.5 billion pounds, in violation of PSR rules. The club will also face another charge of breaching the PSR from the 2022 23 season, as will Nottingham Forest. The Premier League has published a 61-page report explaining the outcome of the appeal.
