The school originated in 1946 as the North Sichuan Agricultural and Industrial College, which had a profound influence in the North Sichuan region at that time. In 1949, the college absorbed Xishan Academy and officially changed its name to North Sichuan University, further enhancing its academic status and influence. In 1950, the college merged with the North Sichuan College of Literature and decided to relocate to Nanchong City to better serve the local and surrounding students.
In 1952, the history of North Sichuan University ushered in an important turning point. In this year, it merged with some majors of East Sichuan Institute of Education, Sichuan University and West China University to form Sichuan Normal University. This event marks a new stage in the development of the school, which further enhances the school's faculty and subject strength.
However, in 1956, the school underwent another major change. In this year, the school was divided into two, and the part that remained in Nanchong was renamed Nanchong Normal College. In the years that followed, the school grew and in 1958 it was upgraded to an undergraduate program and officially renamed Nanchong Normal University.
In the 80s of the 20th century, Nanchong Normal University restored its historical name "Sichuan Normal University", which is not only a respect for the history of the school, but also an affirmation of its academic status. At the beginning of the 21st century, the school was renamed China West Normal University again, further highlighting its influence in the field of higher education in Sichuan Province and even the whole country.
As a key university in Sichuan Province, China West Normal University is the first normal institution of higher learning in Sichuan Province and the first batch of bachelor's and master's degree authorization units in China. Over the years, the school has been committed to cultivating outstanding talents and has made great contributions to the education of Sichuan Province and even the whole country. At the same time, the school is also one of the first batch of universities in Sichuan Province to implement free normal student training, providing strong talent support for basic education in Sichuan Province.
At present, China West Normal University has 30 secondary colleges and 82 undergraduate majors, covering 10 disciplines such as literature, history, education, science, engineering, agriculture, management, economics, law, and art.
