In Windows 11, file extensions are hidden by default. This can cause some confusion for some users as they may need to look at the full name of the file, including its extension, for certain actions or identification. Luckily, there are a few simple ways you can display file extensions.
Method 1: Use the Folder option
Open any of the folders.
On the toolbar, click "..".button and select Options.
In the folder options window that opens, click the "View" tab.
In the "Advanced Settings" list, find and untick the "Hide extensions for known file types" option.
Click the "OK" button to save the settings.
Once you have completed the above steps, you should be able to see the extensions of all your files have been displayed.
Method 2: Use the system search
Press the Win + S key combination to open the system search.
Enter "File Explorer Options" and click on the best match given by the system.
In the File Explorer options window that opens, switch to the View tab.
Under Advanced Settings, find and untick the "Hide extensions for known file types" option.
Click the "OK" button to save the settings.
Now you should be able to see that the extensions of all the files are displayed as well.
For some users, displaying a file extension may give them more confidence in doing file operations, especially if they are dealing with unknown file types. If you find that the extension of a particular file or folder is not showing up correctly, try to check and adjust it using the methods above. With these simple steps, you should be able to easily display file extensions in Windows 11 to better manage your files and folders.
