Today's renovation of the property in Shanghai is a typical "pistol" type of old house.

The owner is a gentle, neat and sunny youth. He loves the feeling of being alone and longs for a space where he can calm down and focus on working, studying and relaxing.

The original pattern problem

The original layout was wasteful and lacked functionality and practicality, which could not meet the owner's pursuit of a high-quality living environment.

Pre-renovation condition

The original unit is a 70's "pistol-shaped" two-bedroom unit. At the time of the initial survey, even though it was a sunny morning, the entrance door had to be lit to be clearly visible. Each space is independent and lacks linkage.

1. The aisles are crowded and the restaurant space is small.

2. The kitchen countertop is limited.

3. The bathroom door is too narrow to accommodate the washer and dryer.

4. The master bedroom where a single person lives is less used and the space is wasted.

5. The balcony is a semi-floor-to-ceiling window, and it is necessary to solve the abruptness of half of the wall.

Retrofit program

After the renovation, the various spaces are closely connected, showing the sense of openness and visual extension of a small apartment.

Renovation highlights

1. The wall between the original bathroom and the kitchen was removed, and the kitchen area was rearranged to increase the kitchen area to accommodate double-door refrigerators and tall cabinets.

2. A window is opened in the middle of the kitchen and dining room, and a western kitchen bar is added to facilitate the storage of small electrical appliances and improve permeability.

3. Adjusted the entry position of the bathroom to accommodate the washing machine and dryer.

4. Use the Z-shaped wall to moderately reduce the bathroom, and plan the space for mops and bath towels.

5. Reduce the space of the second bedroom, increase the height of the ground, adopt a folding bed, and use the bookshelves and triple linkage glass sliding door partitions to realize the dual needs of openness and storage.

6. Remove the redundant balcony brick wall structure to enhance the openness of the space.

Overall design

The owner loved the minimalist black, white and grey tones, and the designer redesigned the spatial structure to create functional areas that connect and extend the line of sight.

Design elements

Black, white and gray with Klein blue accents, combined with the display of different materials, create a unique, simple and high-end living space.

Porch. The original bathroom door was changed to a floating cabinet, which realized the storage of shoes in the house, and part of the light transmission effect solved the problem of the bathroom basin area. An entire mirror has been added to the aisle to act as a full-length mirror and visual extension.

Toilet. By changing the position of the entrance door of the bathroom, the door opening is widened to accommodate the dual-purpose equipment of washing and drying. The interior is designed with dry and wet separation + laundry area, and the location of mops and bath towels is planned by using the Z-shaped wall.

Kitchen. The partition wall between the bathroom and the kitchen was removed, and the kitchen area was increased to accommodate a double-door refrigerator and tall cabinet. Stainless steel wraps the door openings and walls, with black cabinets, presenting a minimalist, fresh and neat texture.

A window has been added between the kitchen and the dining room, and a western kitchen bar is set up to facilitate the placement of small electrical appliances.

Restaurant. Choose a round dining table with a diameter of one meter to meet the daily dining needs of 2 or 3 people. The blue decorative paintings brighten up the space and echo the overall Klein blue elements.

The transparent glass sliding door moderately reduces the original second bedroom to increase the comfort of the dining room. The original concrete column was retained as an artistic decoration.

Living room. The sofa is made of light gray fabric, with a low backrest + deep sitting, which meets the needs of the owner to watch TV and read books. A small bookcase on the side of the sofa was designed, and a paper lamp by Isamu Noguchi created a warm atmosphere.

The TV background wall is left blank in a large area, and the suspended TV cabinet increases the space extensibility. A small amount of black enhances the texture of the space, the glass material separates the functional areas, and the chandelier creates an atmosphere. The living room balcony is incorporated into the interior and is isolated from the outside world with translucent gauze.

The overall design aims to break the original spatial limitations and create an open, fresh and functional living space.

Den. In order to create a sense of brightness and openness, the designer used bookshelves and triple linkage glass sliding doors as partitions. These doors are always kept open to ensure that daylight and ventilation are not affected.

The small study has been adjusted to raise the floor and has a wood veneer surface with a linear light strip to create a bright and welcoming atmosphere despite the limited space.

A fold-out bed is hidden next to the wall, and when the curtains are drawn, it becomes a separate small bedroom for friends and family to stay for a short time.

Bedchamber. In the bedroom, the traditional bed frame structure was avoided and the floor was chosen to place the mattress instead. A 38 meters long large wardrobe and a 1.5 m long office desk.

There is a window between the bedroom and the living room, allowing natural light to flow in, while blinds ensure privacy when resting.

A mushroom-shaped night light is placed at the head of the bed, and there is not much decoration in other areas, pursuing minimalism, making the whole bedroom appear refreshing, tranquil, and create a relaxing atmosphere.

The space layout transformation of this house is amazing! Spaces that were originally isolated and disconnected have been partially opened up to see through and talk to each other.

The "little dark room" that used to need lights during the day is now clear and transparent, and it has a new look!
