MS adhesive, also known as silane modified polyether adhesive, is a sealant made of MS polymer-based polymer, combined with fillers, plasticizers and other functional additives, usually in the form of one or two components. It is a new generation of building sealing materials developed after silicone glue (SR) and polyurethane glue (PU), which is widely used in bonding, caulking, jointing, sealing, waterproofing and reinforcement of construction projects and decoration.
MS glue development history.
In 1979, the Japanese company Kaneka developed the base polymer for silicone-modified polyether sealants.
In 1980, Kaneka prepared the first elastomeric sealant based on terminal silane polyether, which began to be popularized in high-end construction in 1981.
After 1982, MS adhesive technology was rapidly researched and developed in Japan, the United States and Europe, making MS adhesive quickly become the new favorite of the construction sealant market.
The main raw material of MS glue.
The raw materials for the production of MS glue include:
MS prepolymer: composed of terminal alkyl polyether, which is the basis of the glue.
Filler: Silica is usually used as a reinforcing filler to determine the mechanical properties of the glue.
Plasticizers, such as DOP, DCP and DBP, are used to improve the flexibility of polymers.
Silane coupling agent: improve the adhesion between the sealant and the substrate and the degree of cross-linking of the adhesive.
Catalysts: Accelerate curing reactions, such as stannous octanoate and dibutyltin dilaurate.
Anti-aging additives: improve the aging resistance of MS glue.
Properties and characteristics of MS glue.
Broad adhesion to substrates: MS adhesives can be adhered to a wide range of material surfaces, such as inorganic materials, metals and plastics.
Excellent weather resistance and durability: MS adhesive can form a cross-linked structure with good UV and water resistance.
Environmental friendliness: MS glue does not contain toxic ingredients and has low VOC content.
Can be painted: Compared with ordinary silicone glue, the surface of MS glue can be spray painted.
MS glue synthesis process.
The main synthesis process is to mix raw materials such as prepolymers, plasticizers and fillers, and then mix them to make rubber compounds after adding additives. Large companies such as Kaneka and Wacker have their own proprietary production processes to ensure high quality MS adhesive products.
The MS developed by Kaneka is prepared by attaching a silane compound containing a hydrolyzable group to a bifunctional polyether end group with an average relative molecular mass of 5000 10 000 by a correlated chemical reaction. The synthesis of this silane-modified polyether is usually done by a two-step process. In the first step, allyl terminated polyether intermediates were prepared by using allyl polyether alcohol, hydroxyl polyether, etc. as raw materials, dihalomethane as the chain extender, and caustic alkali as the catalyst. In the second step, in the presence of platinum-based catalysts, the refined intermediates are reacted with methyldimethoxysilane through terminal silylation reaction to obtain silane-modified polyethers.
Wacker hybrid STP-E base polymer is a kind of silane-modified polyether prepared by the reaction of functional silane and terminal isocyanate NCO prepolymer, and its molecular backbone structure is a low surface energy polyether chain, which gives hybrid STP-E sealant excellent brushing performance. The molecular chain ends with a methoxysilane, which resembles the structure of a silane coupling agent, resulting in better adhesion of the hybrid STP-E sealant to the substrate.
Market conditions. MS adhesive occupies a certain share of the global construction sealant market, especially in Japan, Europe and the United States.
Due to its excellent performance and environmental protection characteristics, MS glue is gradually gaining a larger market share in China.
Application of MS glue in construction.
Due to their comprehensive advantages, MS adhesives play a key role in the bonding and sealing of various building structures, including high-rise buildings and interior and exterior decoration.
The current situation in the country. The MS glue market was originally booming, reaching a climax in 2017. However, due to factors such as fluctuations in raw materials and reduced demand in the real estate market, the MS glue market has faced some challenges recently. Overcapacity and low-price competition are the main problems in the current domestic market.
