According to reports, the Global Digital Education Development Index (GDEI) is a comprehensive index developed by the Chinese Academy of Education Sciences to evaluate the overall development level of digital education in various countries by innovatively applying the evidence-based evaluation paradigm.
According to the Chinese Academy of Education and Sciences, the development of global digital education can be divided into five stages: transformation start, resource sharing, data-driven, AI integration and ecological reshaping. There are certain differences in the development level of digital education in different countries in six index evaluation dimensions, including the improvement of digital literacy, the construction of digital education system, the innovation of digital education system, the reconstruction of digital education content, the reform of digital teaching, and the upgrading of digital education governance. According to the index ranking, countries with a high level of global digital education development have certain characteristics of aggregation and leapfrog development.
The reporter noted that in the past three years, China has made significant progress in the construction and application of digital resources, the cultivation of digital literacy, and the construction of the digital education system, and the index ranking has jumped from 24th to 9th, advancing 15 places. The Report on the Development of Smart Education in China (2023) presents 20 typical cases in the fields of basic education, vocational education, higher education, and special education, focusing on the practice of digital education in China.
Globally, the report proposes five trends in the recent development of digital education: first, generative AI has broad prospects for educational applications to help achieve large-scale personalized learning; Second, technology-driven immersive scenarios will improve the learning experience and make the integration of virtual and real reality the new normal of learning. Third, educational evaluation will achieve digital transformation and provide support for the lifelong learning system. Fourth, teachers and artificial intelligence coexist, teach and learn together, and create human-machine composite teachers; Fifth, the digital education application ecosystem is booming, and the ubiquitous, diverse, and intelligent learning environment will give rise to new teaching and learning methods.
Li Yongzhi said that the index ranking is not the ultimate goal, and finding the most suitable digital education development path is the key. The characteristic path of China's digital education development will surely contribute more lessons to the development of digital education in the world. It is hoped that through the evaluation of the Global Digital Education Development Index (GDEI), we can jointly build a new international education ecology that is mutually referential, comparable and mutually reinforcing, and contribute to the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.
