1. The largest solar energy storage project in the United States is connected to the grid
According to PVMAGC on January 24, the largest solar + energy storage project in the United States, the Edwards & Sanborn Solar + Energy Storage project, has now been connected to the grid and put into operation, supplying power to units and companies such as the City of San Jose, Southern California Elison, Pacific Gas & Electric, Clean Power Alliance and Starbucks. The 4,600-acre project consists of 1.9 million U.S.-made First Solar solar panels, with a power generation capacity of 875 MWDC and an energy storage capacity of nearly 33 GWh with an interconnection capacity of 13 gw。The energy storage system consists of LG Chem, Samsung, and BYD batteries.
2. South Korea's SK Group built a joint venture in the United States to develop a 13GW battery energy storage project
According to Yonhap News Agency on January 17**, two subsidiaries of South Korea's SK Group, SK Gas and SK D&D, have established a joint venture with Apex Clean Energy of the United States to deploy and operate energy storage systems in the United States. Charlottesville, Virginia-based renewable energy developer Apex Clean Energy announced a joint venture on Jan. 17. The company, SA Grid Solutions, will be 60% funded by SK Group and 40% by APEX Clean Energy.
3. Total acquired Kyon Energy, a German energy storage company
On January 23, Total announced that the company had signed an agreement to acquire the entire share capital of German energy storage company Kyon Energy as part of the development of its integrated power business in the country. The cost of the acquisition includes an upfront payment of €90 million (approximately $98.2 million) and further expenses to be incurred to complete the acquisition. It is understood that since its inception in 2021, Kyon Energy has developed 770MW projects with very competitive grid-connected costs, of which 120MW has been put into operation, 350MW projects are under construction, and 300MW are ready for construction.
4. Panama launched the bidding for 500MW renewable energy + energy storage project in Central America for the first time
Recently, Panama announced that it will conduct its first tender auction for renewable energy distribution and storage projects to meet the country's growing electricity demand and improve grid stability. The country's Ministry of Energy and state-owned transmission company ETESA are planning 500 MW of renewable energy and storage capacity, which will be formally tendered in the second quarter of this year. New projects will be subject to PPAs for a period of 20 years, while existing projects will be granted a term of up to 10 years under the scheme. Successful bidders must have their existing projects operational and online by September 2026, with all new projects going live by January 2029.
5. TIAMAT, a French sodium-ion battery company, received an investment of 30 million euros
French battery developer Tiamat has completed the first phase of its third funding round. The spin-off project of the CNRS Research Center plans to build a sodium-ion battery plant in France. Stellantis Ventures, Arkema, MBDA, historical investors and Bpifrance participated in the round, raising a total of €30 million. Further financing of a similar amount is planned, bringing the total investment to about 1500 million euros.
