Exploring the "Past Life" and "Present Life" of the Press and Publishing Industry

And what exhibits are worth checking in.

China Museum of Modern Press and Publication

The long-standing Chinese civilization has given birth to China's journalism and publishing industry, which has distinctive characteristics. Over the past 100 years, a press and publishing company has told future generations the journey through their "works".

What did the original "Youth Magazine" of "New Youth" look like? What is the specific content in one of the issues of the Xiangjiang Review? How many types of books are in Chung Hwa Book Company's collection? In the Museum of Modern Press and Publication in China, the answer can be found.

Located at No. 3678 Zhoujiazui Road, the China Museum of Modern Press and Publication officially opened to the public on June 30, 2023 after 20 years of preparation. The exhibition hall has a total of 5 floors, divided into 6 halls, covering an area of about 10,000 square meters, with a collection of more than 600,000 pieces. It covers the general history of press and publication, printing technology, children's publishing, art design, digital publishing, audio-visual publishing, etc. Six exhibition halls display a total of 766 sets of exhibits since the end of the Qing Dynasty, including books, periodicals, newspapers, records, celebrity manuscripts, documents and archives, production tools, etc.

Old collection of Chung Hwa Book Company Library(1st floor of the museum).

The old collection of Chung Hwa Book Company Library showcases the rich collection of books in Chung Hwa Book Company Library, which is the largest single cultural relic in the domestic publishing industry. The library displayed in the exhibition hall according to the classification method of Du Dingyou and Liu Guojun preserves many modern publications before 1935, including important reference books and first editions of many famous books. The steel bookshelves and catalogue cabinets used are also original.

Hovering in front of the transparent glass, the 170,000 books in the collection are neatly arranged in the original bookshelves using the original book classification method, including red literature such as "New Youth", and nearly 800 photocopied copies of Kang Youwei's bronze movable type "Ancient and Modern Books Collection" in the fourth year of Yongzheng in the Qing Dynasty. The "sense of age" that blows on the face makes people feel the charm of modern Chinese literary works.

Theme Pavilion(2nd floor of the museum).

The theme pavilion is composed of three parts: "Transformation and Transformation - Modern Chinese Publishing Industry", "Reform and Innovation: Modern Chinese Publishing Industry" and "Forge Ahead - Contemporary Chinese Publishing Industry". It presents the magnificent development path of China's modern press and publishing industry since the end of the Qing Dynasty to the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China.

The most eye-catching feature of the museum is the large-scale interactive art scroll "Shanghai Culture Street in the Early 20th Century". Visitors can scan *** through their mobile phones to incarnate the characters in the long scroll for tours, answering questions and other interactions, and feel the day and night of the cultural street at that time. According to the staff of the museum, the scene of this interactive scroll will change according to the season, and you can see the spring picture of the "Shanghai Culture Street" at that time in the spring season.

Printing Technology Pavilion and Children's Publishing Pavilion(3rd floor of the museum).

The Printing Technology Museum takes the introduction and development of the six modern printing technologies as the entry point, showing the transformation of China's publishing and printing technology from tradition to modernity. Among them, a lithograph machine introduced into China in the late Qing Dynasty is the "treasure of the town" here, 4 meters long, weighing 4 tons, introduced from Germany in the 1870s, after several technological transformations, in the printing industry "effective" for a hundred years. Today, it is still functioning after being electrified.

There are also Chinese typewriters, mimeograph machines, and intaglio engraving tools for printing banknotes at the beginning of the last century, among which the 1910 Commercial Press's five-color lithographed "Nanyang Persuasion Venue Map" and Xu Tianchi Flower Keluo Plate are particularly rare.

The "Digital Technology Restoration Grottoes" on the third floor are also very distinctive, presenting a panoramic view of Cave 38 of the Kizil Caves in Xinjiang, the most wonderful mural part of Cave 17 and the dome of the Kumutula Caves. While appreciating the thousand-year-old mural art that has been digitally "rejuvenated", the audience is enough to experience the artistic charm of "printing can do anything".

Passed by the Children's Publishing House"Children's books look back"with"Brilliant galaxy"The two sections, featuring interesting and interactive experiences, respectively show the history of Chinese children's books from the end of the 19th century to the founding of the People's Republic of China, as well as the children's book publishing industry since the founding of the People's Republic of China. Through classic fairy tale images and rich interactive exhibits, it reviews the 100-year history of Chinese children's books in an entertaining and educational way.

Coming here is like coming to a children's paradise, not only can you take children to appreciate the century-old history of children's books, but the colorful and rich and peculiar scenes in the museum are very suitable for taking photos and checking in. The ring screen projection "A Hundred Years of Children's Books" uses the mythological image of the paper-cut effect to string together the classic images in the century-old children's books. "100,000 Whys" Wonder House uses hexagonal mirrors to create a cool visual effect, in which you can see the "whys" of different eras.

Art & Design Pavilion and Digital Publishing Gallery(4th floor of the museum).

Focusing on the design of modern Chinese books, the Art and Design Museum highlights the use of technological development and design elements according to the context of the times through four parts: "Chinese Characters and Publishing", "From Pictures to Patterns", "Fifty Years of Excitement" and "Reputation at Home and Abroad". Here, you can get a close feel for the development process of modern publication design in China.

With the theme of "Traveling Through Time and Space", the Digital Publishing Hall introduces the history of China's digital publishing development by means of 3D mapping and multi-touch screen interaction, and focuses on the digital transformation of traditional publishing media, the innovative development of new publishing media and the development achievements of online game entertainment publishing. The sparks and crystallization of the collision between traditional publishing and digital publishing are displayed here in multiple dimensions and forms.

Audiovisual Publishing Hall and Temporary Exhibition Hall(5th floor of the museum).

The audio-visual publishing hall is divided into two parts: "Looking Back on the Century of a Long Century" and "The Voice of the Spring and Autumn Times", where visitors can listen to the memories of the times through selected physical records and audio media, showing the development process and achievements of China's record industry and audio-visual publishing industry in Shanghai from the beginning of China's record industry in the 20th century to China's reform and opening up.

It is worth mentioning that from now until February 24, 2024, the temporary exhibition hall on the 5th floor will open the exhibition "Scenery by Mail - Old Shanghai Postcard Exhibition", and citizens and tourists can have a glimpse of the old Shanghai style in history in the memory images printed on the precious old postcards.
