On February 10, 2024, Min Aung Hlaing, Chairman of Myanmar's State Administration Committee, signed Order No. 27 2024, announcing that Myanmar's National Service Law will come into force on February 10, 2024.
It is reported that Myanmar's "National Service Law" was formulated by the Myanmar State Peace and Development Council in 2010**, and on February 10, 2024, more than 13 years after the law was enacted, Min Aung Hlaing, chairman of the Myanmar State Management Committee, signed an order announcing the official entry into force of Myanmar's "National Service Law".
The National Service Act stipulates that every citizen is obliged to perform military service and must be called up for military service. Men between the ages of 18 and 35 and women between the ages of 18 and 27 are required to perform military service. For those who meet the requirements of the technical arms, the conscription period is: male, 18 years old but under 45 years old; Female, aged 18 and under 35.
The duration of service shall be: (a) All citizens who have reached the age of military service shall be called for military service for a period not exceeding 24 months. (b) Citizens of military service age who have been called up to serve as military specialists for a period not exceeding 36 months. For technical arms that have reached the age of military service, the period of conscription and service shall not exceed 36 months.
The regulations for exemption from military service are: 1. Religious persons; 2. Married women (including divorced women with children); 3. Any person with a permanent physical disability; 4. Persons who are permanently unfit for military service as determined by the Examination Committee of the Military Medical Corps; 5. Persons who have been exempted from military service by order of the ** Conscription Commission.
In addition, in the event of an emergency in the country, the period of service can be extended to 5 years. Those who should not be conscripted for military service shall be sentenced to five years' imprisonment.
