Foreword:
With the advancement of globalization, China's higher education is also constantly exploring and changing. As one of the important measures, the merger of universities aims to integrate resources, enhance international competitiveness, and promote the vigorous development of higher education. However, merging is not a simple additive operation, but a complex process that requires careful thought and careful planning. As a typical case in this wave, Jilin University's merger is full of challenges and opportunities.
At the beginning of the 21st century, China's higher education has entered a new stage of development. In order to adapt to the trend of globalization and enhance international competitiveness, many universities have chosen to integrate resources, expand their scale and improve their comprehensive strength through mergers. This wave not only reflects the country's attention to and support for higher education, but also reflects the strong desire of universities to pursue excellence and become world-class universities.
The motivations for merger are varied, but the core goal is undoubtedly to enhance the overall strength and international influence of the university. Through the merger, colleges and universities can rapidly expand their scale, increase educational resources, optimize the discipline structure, and improve the quality of teaching and scientific research. At the same time, the merger will also help enhance the school's social influence and international competitiveness, laying a solid foundation for the school's long-term development.
As a leader in this wave of merger, Jilin University's merger process is full of twists and turns. In 2000, Jilin University ushered in a major change in its history - merging four universities, including Jilin University of Technology, Bethune Medical University, Changchun University of Science and Technology, and Changchun Institute of Posts and Telecommunications. This initiative attracted widespread attention and expectations from the society at that time. In 2004, Jilin University completed the merger of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Munitions University, thus successfully integrating five institutions of higher learning into one, becoming the 985 university with the largest number of campuses at that time.
Each of the five universities merged by Jilin University has its own unique characteristics and has a strong reputation in its field. Jilin University of Technology, as a prestigious university, has long been recognized as a 211 project university, and its strength in the field of vehicle engineering is even more proud of the country, which can be called a leader. In addition, the school has also excelled in professional fields such as mechanical and power engineering and is well recognized by the industry.
Changchun University of Science and Technology, formerly known as Changchun Institute of Geology, has an outstanding influence in the field of geology and has made important contributions to geological education and scientific research in China. Changchun University of Posts and Telecommunications, as a university directly under the former Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, has been in the forefront of the country in communication engineering and enjoys a high reputation.
However, the merger was not all smooth sailing. Jilin University faced many challenges in the period after the merger. First, the combined school is huge, bloated, and inefficiently managed. This makes it difficult for the university to give full play to its advantages in resource allocation, teaching and scientific research, and even the phenomenon of waste of resources and internal competition. Secondly, after the merger, Jilin University lacks obvious breakthroughs and innovations in terms of discipline characteristics and advantages. The original distinctive disciplines gradually lost their original advantages and status after the merger, which undoubtedly brought great pressure and challenges to the development of the school.
Judging from the results of the fourth round of discipline evaluation, Jilin University did not occupy a place in the competition of A+ disciplines, and only achieved A-class ratings in two subject areas, chemistry and Marxist theory, with a total of 11 A-class disciplines.
The vehicle engineering major of the former Jilin University of Technology, although it enjoys a certain reputation in China, has failed to rank among the top three in the country in the latest ranking. Mechanical engineering, a first-level discipline to which it belongs, only received an A- rating in the discipline evaluation of Jilin University. At the same time, the communication engineering discipline of Changchun University of Posts and Telecommunications only received a B- rating in the evaluation. The geology of Changchun University of Science and Technology, despite its deep accumulation and popularity in the field of geology in China, only received a Class B rating in this evaluation.
After the merger of the five universities, although the scale of Jilin University has been significantly expanded, the overall subject evaluation results are not satisfactory. Especially in the subject areas where they originally had advantages, they also failed to maintain their A+ ratings, which undoubtedly brought a lot of impact to the development of the school.
According to the latest Alumni Association's 2024 Chinese University Rankings, Jilin University ranks 25th in the country. In the ABC national university rankings, Jilin University ranks 28th in the country. Although these ranking results do not fully represent the comprehensive strength and level of the university, they also reflect that Jilin University still faces many challenges and difficulties on the road of development after the merger.
Looking forward to the future, Jilin University still faces many opportunities and challenges. However, as long as the university can continue to deepen reform, strengthen internal management, optimize the discipline structure, and improve the quality of students, it will be able to usher in a better development prospect.
