According to Nikkei, the world's largest semiconductor foundry TSMC is considering building a second factory in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, and the address will be located in Juyang Town, the same as the first factory. Previously, TSMC also said that if it wants to build a second factory, it will be selected around the factory under construction.
It is reported that TSMC will officially announce the news in February, and the Japanese Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Tetsushi Sakamoto, who is a member of the House of Representatives representing the third constituency of Kumamoto Prefecture (including Kikuyo Town), revealed the news.
It is reported that TSMC plans to hold a board meeting in early February, at which time it may approve the Kumamoto No. 2 plant investment plan, and is expected to announce the dividend distribution for the fourth quarter of last year on the same day.
TSMC Chairman Liu Deyin said at a corporate briefing on January 18 that TSMC is focusing on evaluating options to invest in the construction of its second factory in Japan, and said that it is expected to use seven-nanometer process technology at the plant, but there is no more information to share at this time.
TSMC is expected to invest about 2 trillion yen (about $13.5 billion) in the new factory, which will boost the economic development of southwest Japan. However, local residents say this could raise concerns about groundwater contamination and traffic congestion.
TSMC's first factory in Japan is an $8.6 billion wafer fab that is expected to begin mass production later this year. (Song Mingxuan).
