Eye health science education lays a solid foundation for myopia prevention and control

In September 2023, a modern "Children's Eye Health Science Education Center" was completed and put into use in Huanan Experimental Primary School in Danyang City, Jiangsu Province. South China Experimental Primary School has always attached great importance to the prevention and control of myopia among students, and the completion and use of the "Children's Eye Health Science Education Center" has laid a more solid material foundation for the bright future of children.

Build a good software and hardware environment for myopia prevention and control

The school has always attached great importance to the construction of an environment for children and adolescents to prevent myopia education. With the active efforts of the school, Jiangsu Wanxin Optics and other enterprises donated more than 100 yuan to build the first campus "Children's Eye Health Science Education Hall" in Zhenjiang City. The museum covers an area of nearly 300 square meters, with areas such as visual space, vision testing, interactive experience, publicity and education, myopia correction, glasses development, eye health research, etc. Every day, several classes of students walked into the "Children's Eye Health Science Education Hall" to visit, and the ophthalmology expert team, the "five elders" of the Guan Working Committee and volunteers gave on-site explanations and guidance. Through the tour, the students learned about the importance of eye care and how to protect their eyes. They also gave the "Children's Eye Health Science Education Center" a nickname - "Star Pavilion". Children imagine their eyes shining like stars in the sky.

With the help of a good hardware environment, the school has set up a "lecture hall" for myopia prevention, and invited Li Lihua, an expert and professor of the National Comprehensive Prevention and Control of Myopia in Children and Adolescents, to serve as the guidance expert of the "Children's Eye Health Science Education Hall", and come to the school to give students a lecture on myopia prevention in children and adolescents. The professional teachers, volunteer experts, the "five elders" of the Guan Working Committee and the school guidance teachers jointly designed and produced 20 episodes of children's eye health science popularization shorts, such as "Our Eyes", "The Secret of Eyes", "Eyes are Afraid", "Myopia is Coming", "Good Friends of Eyes", "Love Eyes to Prevent Near-big Breakthroughs" and "Bright Future", which were uploaded to the campus network for all classes to watch and learn. The school has also selected 30 "Eye Care and Myopia Prevention Education Phrases", which are pushed to teachers, parents and classes every day. In the class meeting, the class teacher carried out the theme education activity of "Caring for Eyes and Preventing Nearsightedness" according to the anti-myopia situation of the students in the class, and actively extended it to the family and society.

The school also set up a publicity window for children and adolescents to prevent myopia science on campus, and designed a theme column of "love eyes and prevent nearness" in the class newspaper or class culture display in each classroom, so as to educate and guide students to "pay attention to it early, detect it early, diagnose it early, and diagnose it early" to form a strong atmosphere of anti-myopia science education.

The "Star" school-based curriculum was set up to strengthen the training of eye health science

Relying on the resource advantages of the "Children's Eye Health Science Education Center", the school scientifically designs a series of hands-on activities to enable students to learn to prevent and control myopia scientifically.

The Children's Eye Health Science Education Center organizes experts to regularly provide "eye health check-up" experience activities for students in grades 4 to 6. Each class applies independently, and each class is organized into multiple groups, with 4 to 6 people in each group, to carry out activities in the "eye examination", "vision test", "interactive experience", "vision protection", "blind road area" and other areas in the museum. Under the guidance of professional teachers, students experience being ophthalmologists, learn to operate eye biological automatic measuring instruments, and try to test each other. The self-test and mutual test experience activities stimulated students' interest in actively exploring the world of the eye, and they had a preliminary understanding of the concepts of axial length, corneal thickness, eye power, etc., understood the medical causes of myopia, and learned the simple operation of vision testing. Students have a more comprehensive understanding of eye and myopia prevention and control, and pay more attention to the health of their eyes.

The school also collects data such as each student's visual acuity, spherical lens, eye axis, and glasses, establishes an electronic file for myopia prevention, compares it regularly, and feeds back information to students and parents in a timely manner to improve specific methods and strategies for myopia prevention.

On the basis of guiding students to maintain correct reading and writing posture, do eye exercises, improve lighting configuration, control the time of using electronic products, etc., the school gives full play to the role of the myopia prevention and control expert team, develops and implements the "star" school-based anti-myopia course, and carries out a series of anti-myopia micro-training activities such as "outdoor sunlight exercise", "intermittent eye use", "vision vision", "eye muscle training", "gathering ball", "reverse racket" and "eye muscle". Signed a green agreement to prevent myopia. The school advocates that middle and senior students formulate prevention and control goals according to the actual situation of their own vision, and sign a green agreement with teachers and parents to love and protect their eyes, including eye care goals, healthy eye requirements, anti-myopia training time and activities, self-examination and supervision, etc. Students carry out self-control every day, classmates remind each other, and teachers and parents guide and supervise.

Cultivating eye-loving little propagandists. The school uses the "Children's Eye Health Science Education Center" and other activities such as classes and Young Pioneers to train little propagandists who love and care for their eyes at different levels, and actively promote the prevention of myopia in classes, campuses and communities.

Carry out mutual inspection and mutual evaluation of prevention. The school has established a mutual evaluation and mutual inspection mechanism around the science education of children and adolescents to prevent myopia, included myopia prevention in the reference index for evaluating "three good students", and organized students to conduct self-evaluation and mutual evaluation of vision data every semester, and teachers, parents and the "five elders" of the Guan Working Committee participated in the evaluation. The school will give praise to students who are healthy and effective in preventing myopia, and will report and reward classes, families, teachers and parents who have done a good job in myopia prevention education.

With the joint efforts of the school, parents and communities, the school has initially formed a new pattern of myopia prevention and control in children, and the work has achieved remarkable results, and the myopia rate of all students in the school has steadily decreased. The research related to "Comprehensive Prevention and Control of Myopia in Children and Adolescents" has been approved by provincial and municipal projects and the research has been initiated. The educational resources of the school's "Children's Eye Health Science Education Center" are radiating to primary and secondary schools and kindergartens in Danyang City and Zhenjiang City, benefiting more children and adolescents.
