If you need to be reminded of how incredible nature is, one of Earth's "eternal fires" has been captured in a shocking piece posted on social media.

The beautiful natural features show the "never-ending" flames hidden behind the waterfall, which was captured by Mike Lougran, who posted on Instagram**.

The ** has been passed more than 21 million times, showcasing the amazing characteristics of Buffalo in upstate New York.

Footage recorded in January shows Orchard Park's Eternal Flame Falls, where the flames burn intensely in the clip despite icy conditions and nearby waterfalls.

In the caption, Loughran wrote: "A rare naturally occurring eternal flame!

This flame is one of the 9 naturally occurring eternal flames that we have on Earth. "Because it's located inside a waterfall. They occur due to a combination of natural gas leaks from cracks in the earth.

As Loughran continues, the flame can initially be lit by humans or naturally by lightning strikes – before adding that "some say this flame was lit by Native Americans hundreds of years ago".

While the true number of natural flames like this one is unknown, one of the most famous flames is located on a hilltop in southwestern Turkey and is known as the Chimera Flame.

Like the one captured by Loughran, the top of the burning mountain is a gas escaping from the depths of the earth.

We find these unusual types of methane in many, many places. This is not an uncommon phenomenon," said Giuseppe Etiope, a member of the group who helped discover the cause of the Chimaera flame in 2014.
