Since ancient times, Chinese folk have had the custom of placing utensils in houses, villages, temples, and mausoleums to ward off evil spirits and bless peace.
The town house mask is an extension of the ghost exorcism mask in folklore events, and is used to drive away evil spirits. The wooden people of the Menghai Hani ethnic group in Yunnan Province (Fig. 1) are placed on both sides of the Longba Gate, which means Shenzhai Gate. Longba Gate stands at the entrance of the village, which is considered to be the boundary between humans and ghosts, and the door is the territory of people, protected by the god of the village, and the world of ghosts outside the door, which means to protect the peace of the villagers. The Hani people in Yunnan Province hold a ceremony to change the "Longba Gate" before sowing every year.
The door god of the Shanglin Zhuang people in Guangxi (Figure 2) is a god of blessing and misfortune in folk beliefs, which was pasted on the door in the old days to ward off evil spirits and avoid ghosts, protect the safety of the house, and welcome blessing Naji, is one of the most popular protective gods of the folk, with a black face, three round eyes, different shapes, open mouth and tongue, and a strange image.
Sichuan Ganzi Tibetan bronze gilt town temple mask (3), is the first god mask hanging in the temple, used to resist the fierce town temple, and for the people to worship. Yunnan Fuyuan Aquarium (Picture 4), a tiger's head shape, with a red cloth folded on the top of the head, has a hideous and terrifying face, which is used to deter and drive away sneaky disasters.
These strange folk techniques have become a part of the traditional architectural culture and mask culture of ethnic minorities.
