The founding major general refused to go to work in the Air Force, and Liu Yalou did it with one mov

Since the end of the Lanzhou Campaign in August 1949, there has been no major fighting in the northwest. ** The grand plan of building a two-thousand-mile railway in five years was proposed, and 200,000 field soldiers put down their steel guns, picked up hammers and drills, and dug mountains with their hands.

The 10,000 soldiers of the 10th Division of the Fourth Army were no exception, and they were responsible for building the railway from Tianshui to Lanzhou.

Although the living conditions have improved a lot, it is a new and severe test to dig the mountain and dig the road with the hands of the steel gun.

Under the guidance of the railway engineers and technicians they received, the commanders and fighters encountered high mountains when building the roadbed, and either they drilled holes and fired artillery, blasted away rocks, or dug caves and tunnels.

Compared with fighting on the battlefield, building a railway is much less dangerous, but the physical exertion is equally amazing.

When the railway embankment was being extended by one foot, in June 1950, the higher authorities suddenly issued an order to transfer Liu Maogong, commander of the 10th Division, to the Air Force.

Mr. and Mrs. Liu Maogong.

From the 4th Regiment of the 4th Division, the predecessor of the 30th Regiment of the 10th Division of the Red Army, Liu Maogong worked in the 10th Division for 16 years. He had a lot of affection for this unit and was reluctant to leave.

More importantly, at that time, many people knew that being in the Air Force was flying planes, which was completely different from the Army, and there were many things that needed to be relearned.

Liu Maogong felt that after so many years in the army, he had changed from a sheep herding baby who only knew a few words to a division commander, and he usually either pondered about fighting such a war or thought about how to lead the troops, and he had never heard of flying a plane.

Although he went to a "university" (Kang Da), entered a party school, and lived in a graduate class at the military and political school of the left-behind corps, his education level was still far from the requirements of the Air Force.

Besides, Liu Maogong is 34 years old, and when he is old, he feels that he can't do it, and he doesn't want to do it, so it is better to continue to work in the old army until he is old.

Although Liu Maogong did not want to work in the Air Force, his superiors ordered Liu Maogong to report for duty as soon as possible. There was no way, Liu Maogong had no choice but to leave the Tenth Division with his family, first went to the Lintao Military Headquarters, and met Zhang Dazhi, the commander of the Fourth Army.

Zhang Dazhi (second from right).

Commander Zhang said: "It's not the opinion of the army to adjust you, to be honest, I don't want you to go." However, in fact, the corps probably can't be the master, this is an order from the political department of the field army. ”

Liu Maogong said that he would go to the Corps and the Field Army to express his views. Zhang Dazhi said yes, and specially sent Comrade Yao Zhiyi, chief of staff of the Fourth Army, to accompany Liu Maogong.

Liu Maogong and Comrade Yao Zhiyi went to Lanzhou together and lived at the headquarters of the Second Corps. First, they approached Zhang Wenzhou, chief of staff of the Corps.

When Zhang Wenzhou heard this, he was taken aback: "How could I let you go to the Air Force, don't go!" It's good in the 4th Army, what are you doing in the Air Force? Tell Noji about it and try not to go. ”

Liu Maogong also approached Zhu Ming, director of the Political Department, who was a political work cadre with a strong sense of principle

Lieutenant General Zhu Ming. As a party member, a soldier, and a leading cadre, can you disobey the orders and organizational decisions of your superiors? ”

Liu Maogong was unwilling, and went to the Yiye Headquarters to find Gan Siqi, deputy political commissar and director of the Political Department: "Director Gan, did you recommend me to the Air Force?" If you don't recommend it, how do others know me? ”

Director Gan patiently said to Liu Maogong: "Yes, I recommended it. Comrade Liu Yalou, commander of the Air Force, asked the Central Military Commission to select and transfer 15 young division-level cadres from the army to the Air Force. ”

The Military Commission allocated 4 indicators to Yiye. After review, I recommended you and another comrade among the nine division commanders of the Second Corps and reported them to the Military Commission. ”

Because another comrade is a year older than you, the Military Commission approved you. It's something to agree with. If you don't go, won't that make me go back on my word? ”

Liu Maogong said: "Then what should I do? I am definitely not qualified for the work of the Air Force, can the director report to the Military Commission and change the candidate? ”

Gan Siqi. Director Gan thought for a while and said, "Okay, I'll report." But you must be prepared to go, the decision of the Military Commission will not be changed easily, and the Air Force will also inspect you, if the Air Force inspection is not successful, I welcome you back. ”

Liu Maogong had nothing to say, so he had to pin his hopes on the Central Military Commission to change its decision or the Air Force would not pass the inspection. Before leaving, Comrade Gan Siqi said: "You are pale, you have lost a lot of weight, you have been tired from road construction recently, go for a physical examination!" ”

Liu Maogong went to the field military hospital to check his body, and several Soviet medical experts came to examine him, and there was no problem with his body, and then asked Liu Maogong to rotate quickly in a wheelchair, suddenly stopped, and asked Liu Maogong for directions. Liu Mao's function is accurately pointed out.

Little did he know at the time that this was actually the first level of entry into the Air Force.

A week later, Deputy Political Commissar Gan Siqi said to Liu Maogong: "No, the decision of the Central Military Commission cannot be changed, get ready, and set off immediately!" ”

Yiye specially sent a C-46 transport plane to send the three selected cadres -- Liu Zhen, political commissar of the 12th Division of the 4th Army, Liu Fenghong, deputy commander of the 8th Division of the 3rd Army, Liu Maogong, commander of the 10th Division of the 4th Army, and their families to Beijing.

C-46 transport aircraft.

Comrade Liu Maogong and Comrade Liu Zhen are also destined. On the same day, they went to Lanzhou as cadres of the Air Force. More than 30 years later, they returned to the Air Force of the Lanzhou Military Region and served as commander and commissar, respectively. After retirement, they are neighbors.

The Air Force Command is located at the west entrance of Minxiang in the eastern suburbs. In the past, it was the foreign embassy district. The compound occupied by the Air Force Command was originally the location of the Kuomintang North China Air Force Command.

Liu Maogong and the others still did not give up at this time, and they still planned to return to the old unit, but of course they did not prepare to report for duty, but talked with Liu Yalou, commander of the Air Force, face-to-face, and asked him to "raise his noble hand" and let them go back to the wilderness.

At this time, the Air Force was officially established only 8 months ago. The leadership of the Air Force has not yet been allocated. There are very few cadres, and they all work in the courtyard of Minxiang in the eastern suburbs. Commander Liu Yalou happened to be there.

The three of them got straight to the point and talked about their desire to return to the old army. When Liu Maogong went to the Red Army University, Comrade Liu Yalou was the head of the training department and Liu Maogong's old superior, and he also knew Liu Maogong.

In addition, at that stage, a large number of people were transferred from the army to the air force, and there were probably not a few people who encountered ideological problems like Liu Maogong.

Therefore, Liu Yalou is not in a hurry, not to blame, and not angry. He was very patient and cordial in persuasion and education, and rejected the "reasons" that Liu Maogong and others had already thought of. Therefore, the four people talked for 3 hours without results.

Liu Yalou found that Liu Maogong said the most, and decided that he was the "leader" among the three, so he talked to Liu Maogong alone the next day, but after talking for a long time, Liu Maogong couldn't convince him, and he couldn't convince Liu Maogong.

Liu Maogong's last sentence - I quit the Air Force! Liu Yalou smiled bitterly for a while, but he didn't get angry, and finally asked Liu Maogong to go back and think about it.

Early the next morning, Liu Maogong went to find Comrade Xu Guangda, the newly appointed commander of the armored corps and former commander of the Second Corps. He was transferred a month earlier than Liu Maogong and lived in the Xiangcun restaurant, which was also outside the front door, very close.

Commander Xu was good at listening to the opinions of his subordinates, resourceful, and decisive in trouble, and was an old chief respected by Liu Maogong, so Liu Maogong asked him for help.

As soon as he heard that Liu Maogong was going to ask him to go to the Military Commission to make suggestions, Xu Guangda scratched his head and said embarrassedly:

Xiao Liu, this is easy to say, when you were in Lanzhou, you didn't convince Director Gan to let you go, and now that you have come to Beijing and reported to the Air Force Headquarters, how else can I help you? ”

After a pause, Xu Guangda said again: "If you really don't want to do it, you can also come to me, and we will be armored soldiers together!" I'll make you the commander of the chariot division! (there were 4 tank divisions in total)".

Liu Maogong still wanted to return to the 10th Division of the 4th Army of the old army, and also refused the good intentions of the old leader Xu Guangda.

Liu Yalou got angry when he talked to Liu Maogong for the third time: "Comrade, how can you be like this? You are a revolutionary soldier and a member of the Communist Party, Communist Party members must obey the organizational arrangement, and soldiers must obey the orders of their superiors, do you obey or disobey? ”

Liu Maogong was not convinced: "There are also provisions in the party constitution that allow Communist Party members to put forward opinions!" ”

Liu Yalou's tone was a little urgent: "It was the Military Commission that transferred you, and it wasn't me Liu Yalou who transferred you, and the Military Commission ordered you to obey or disobey?" ”

Liu Maogong still refused: "I have a weak cultural foundation, and I can't do well in the Air Force." ”

Liu Yalou pointed to Yiye's appraisal of Liu Maogong: "You are an excuse, this is an appraisal of you by a wild party committee, you see, how can you say that you can't do it?" ”

Liu Maogong said: "That refers to the army, and I can't learn how to engage in the air force!" ”

Liu Yalou said helplessly: "You comrade, I have already talked to you three times, why are you still so stubborn?" ”

Liu Maogong still didn't let go: "I also begged you three times, why don't you understand my difficulties?" ”

On Sunday, Liu Yalou arranged for the Air Force Command to send a jeep to pick up Liu Maogong's family to the Summer Palace. Mr. and Mrs. Liu Maogong took their son with them.

I went to know that all this was Liu Yalou's "strategy".

There were many people who went on this day, including Xiao Hua, second deputy director of the General Political Department, Deng Hua, minister of public security and commander of the public security army, and commander of the 13th Corps of the Fourth Field Army.

Liu Maogong swam with them the Seventeen Holes Bridge and Wanshou Mountain, and also took a ferry to watch Kunming Lake. During the tour, Liu Yalou kept silent about work, so everyone was very casual.

At noon, everyone was hungry and ate at a restaurant in the Summer Palace, and Liu Yalou paid for the guests out of his own pocket.

Liu Yalou said with a smile: "Let me introduce to you, this Comrade Liu Maogong is the most capable and youngest division commander in Yiye. But speaking of this division commander Liu, he has already been transferred to the Air Force, but he doesn't want to do it, I have already talked to him three times, but I haven't been able to talk about it yet. ”

Xiao Hua had a better temper, and it was the first time he saw Liu Maogong, so he gently persuaded: "Commander Liu invited Zhuge three times, go!" Go to the Air Force, there is great hope! ”

Not possible. He knew Liu Maogong when he was in the Red Army, and he has always been strict with cadres, so he seriously criticized

That's not going to work, you have to obey orders. You used to perform very well when you were the commander of the 78th Division of the 15th Red Army, how can this be the case now? You have to obey the organization's decision, and you must report immediately! ”

In the face of so many leaders, Liu Maogong was a little embarrassed, and it was really difficult to shirk it, so he had to agree: "Okay, I will obey the organization's assignment and report tomorrow!" ”

Everyone laughed. ** said: "Yes, this is how revolutionary soldiers should be!" Liu Yalou also stood up with a smile and shook hands with Liu Maogong.

Later, Liu Maogong heard that his old subordinates, Zhang Guijin, commander of the 28th Regiment of the 10th Division, and Tian Qiyuan, commander of the 12th Division and combat hero, were unwilling to go to the Air Force anyway, so they ran back to the unit. It seems that there are many people who are more stubborn than Liu Maogong.

Comrade Gan Siqi, deputy political commissar and director of the Political Department of the Yiye (Northwest Military Region), was indeed true to his word. He left the original post of commander of the 10th Division vacant for half a year, and it was not until Liu Maogong really took root in the Air Force that Comrade Zuo Ai, political commissar of the 10th Division, concurrently served as the commander of the division.

After reporting to the Air Force, Liu Maogong went to the outpatient department of the Air Force Health Department for a physical examination. In charge of the examination was a Soviet doctor, who carried out the examination according to the conditions of the pilot, the requirements were very strict, and the examination items were numerous and detailed.

Modern Air Force Physical Examination.

There are also a few special objects, such as the electric chair that Liu Maogong sat in Lanzhou. The Soviet doctor pressed the switch, the chair rotated in place at high speed, and then pressed the switch to stop, and immediately asked you to point to the north, south, south, and north. Liu Maogong has good physical fitness and can do everything.

Two days later, Liu Maogong took a train to study in the cadre class of the Second Aviation School in Changchun City, Northeast China.

The Second Aviation School is one of the six aviation schools built with the assistance of the Soviet Union, and its instructors are mostly Soviet Air Force officers, military academy teachers, and ace pilots, while there are very few Chinese instructors.

The aviation school was organized with reference to the Soviet aviation school, and the aircraft and equipment used were also purchased from the Soviet Union. The aircraft mainly includes the Yak-18 primary training aircraft, the Utber-2 intermediate training aircraft, the Utber-2 bomber trainer, the Tu-2 bomber, etc.

Liu Maogong's class is a cadre class, with more than 40 students. Most of them are division-level cadres transferred from the troops, and they have few regimental posts and no battalion posts.

In terms of age structure, there are also younger ones who are older than Liu Maogong. Liu Maogong is 34 years old this year, which is neither big nor small.

Most of them have a similar level of education to Liu Maogong, and they have only attended private schools for two or three years, and only three or four cadres have gone to middle school.

Including Liu Maogong, there were only two or three people in the old Red Army, and the rest of the people basically joined the army during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, and some of them were transferred from the underground party to the army in the early days of the War of Liberation.

The head teacher of the cadre class is called Sha Ke, a native of Dandong, Liaoning, and an old subordinate of Lu Zhengcao. Later, he served as the head of the Air Force Training Department, and at the time of the 55 award, he became a major general.

Before entering the aviation school, Liu Yalou asked Liu Maogong: "You must first learn the theory, and then learn to fly, and strive to fly out." ”

As a recruit of the Air Force, Liu Maogong also made up his mind that he must study hard and become a qualified Air Force cadre.

But when you really learn it, your culture is low and your foundation is poor. What "aircraft structure", "engine structure", "principle of flight", "pilotage", "meteorology" ......It's hard to read, hard to remember, hard to understand.

Aviation school cadets in class.

Because the Soviet teachers overestimated the education level of their students, were in a hurry, had a stern attitude (even rude), and had a poor level of translation (mainly because they did not understand the technical terminology), Liu Maogong's lectures were like listening to "heavenly books".

Teachers (consultants) in the USSR were especially fond of asking questions in class, and students were afraid to ask questions. As soon as I asked a question, I was blinded and extremely nervous. Unable to answer, the Soviets got angry and scolded: "Do you still want to learn to fly?!" "Like an adult reprimanding a child.

Most of the students had served as the head of the army before entering the school, who had not managed thousands of troops? They used to "dictate" to tens of thousands of people below. Who knew that when I got to school, I would be angry with "foreigners".

Many people find it difficult to accept this for a while, and after class, some people sigh alone, and some even hold their heads and cry!

However, the Soviet advisers, despite their strict requirements, had a very good relationship with the students during breaks, and often invited them to eat and play on weekends.

For the difficulties, Liu Maogong has been fully prepared. Originally, I didn't want to do it before, but I took into account the word "difficult". But now that he has entered the Air Force, Liu Maogong can no longer be afraid! What to do? There is no good way, only study hard!

In class, Liu Maogong sat upright like a primary school student, listened carefully, and did not let go of a word or term. With all the remaining time and energy, write down any questions, ask the teacher individually, and gradually catch up.

Heaven rewards hard work". After about three or four months, Liu Maogong will not be "uncomfortable" in class questions, weekly routine tests, and monthly tests. On the contrary, there are some expectations for them, and he is no longer afraid of not being able to keep up with the pace of teaching.

In addition to theoretical learning, practical operation also plays an important role. When learning to fly, the Soviet teacher flew the plane and asked the students to be navigators.

The Soviet teacher deliberately drove the plane from left to right, deviating from the course, and asked you to immediately answer how much to correct to the left, how much to correct to the right, how many degrees to deviate, you have to be reprimanded, and the unlucky ones were also beaten by the Soviet teacher with a joystick.

Liu Maogong studied bombers, and the instructor was a Soviet colonel who was known for his severity. Due to his careful study in class and hard practice after class, Liu Maogong was able to operate with ease in practice.

The bombing training consisted of drawing a large circle with lime at the field range, with small circles inside, the same number of circles as the infantry shooting targets, and a small white flag planted in the center of the bull's-eye. Throwing a trainer bomb is scored based on the number of rings in the bomb.

Once, when it was Liu Maogong's turn to drop a bomb, Liu Maogong repeatedly calculated according to the formula in advance, kept the error to a minimum, stared intently at the target from the nose scope, calculated the amount of advance, and quickly pressed the button.

The bomb went straight to the bull's-eye and fell. With a "bang", the small flag was blown down, and the highest score - 5 points for red.

In the second semester, Liu Maogong's academic performance was very good, scoring 7 5 points and 2 4 points in 9 theoretical courses. All 4 practical exercises are 5 points.

Unfortunately, due to the initial establishment of the Air Force and the lack of talent, Liu Maogong only studied at the Second Aviation School for two semesters. He graduated in less than a year and did not learn to fly an airplane independently.

In July 1951, Liu Maogong was transferred to the political commissar of the Fourth Aviation School. There are more than 80 Yak-18, Yak-11 and the most advanced MiG-15 aircraft in the school, and more than 150 instructors.

Comrade Lu Liping, the principal of the school, is a veteran cadre of the Red Army and the West Route Army. In March 1938, he learned to fly in the Xinjiang Air Force, which was founded by our party. In the autumn of 1946, he was sent from Yan'an to the Northeast to run an aviation school, with good flying skills and familiarity with the business.

Lu Liping. The school adviser was a young Soviet officer, very zealous. He knew that Liu Maogong had learned to fly at the Second Aviation School, mastered ground taxiing and air flying, and was also taken to fly, and now he also wants to continue to learn to fly.

He said while agreeing: "I will take you to learn to fly, it doesn't take 60 hours, 40 hours can ensure that you can fly to the sky independently!" ”

It was easy for him to teach, but it was difficult for Liu Maogong to learn, because the school had just moved in, the work was complicated, and the burden of the political commissar was on his shoulders, and Liu Maogong was so busy all day long that he couldn't squeeze out any study time.

At a time when the school was stable and the time was a little wider, unfortunately, the commander of a division of the Air Force had a flight accident. The Air Force Command issued a death order: Cadres at and above the division level or cadres over the age of 35 are not allowed to learn to fly.

Liu Maogong was involved in both, so he was deprived of the right to learn to fly.

At one time he went to a meeting of the Air Force command. After the meeting, Liu Yalou pulled Liu Maogong back and said, "Don't learn to fly." ”

Liu Maogong said: "Why? When I went to the Fourth Aviation School, you said that you must fly out, but now you won't let me. You promised me how to fly, and I hope you will keep your promise. ”

No way! Now that the situation has changed, I can't help but change my original decision and not be allowed to fly anymore. There was a division commander who fell, and I made a review to **, and if something happened again, I couldn't finish the review! ”

In this way, Liu Maogong's dream of flying out in another thirty or forty hours was completely shattered, which was the regret of his life.

At that time, in addition to Soviet advisers, most of the flight instructors, brigades, and squadron cadres of the Fourth Aviation School, where Liu Maogong worked, were former Kuomintang Air Force rebels.

These people are skilled and highly educated. In the initial phase of the Air Force, it really played a big role.

However, Soviet advisers paid too much attention to their use and training, despising or even abandoning the training and education of war-tested workers and peasants selected from the army.

Liu Maogong believes that this tendency to put the cart before the horse must be corrected, otherwise cadres selected from among the workers and peasants will never become experts and master the command ability of the air force.

At that time, Liu Maogong, who was also the head of the cadre department of the Fourth Aviation School, brought the matter to the party committee for study, and everyone supported it.

Therefore, together with the members of the party committee, he drew up a list of training comrades, and Hui Zihua, deputy director of the cadre department, discussed the issue of training these comrades with the Soviet political advisers of the aviation school.

The political adviser looked at the list, listened to the report, and said arbitrarily: "No! These people have a poor cultural foundation and can't be cultivated, you are a suicide policy! ”

The next day, Liu Maogong went to talk, but to no avail. The consultant emphasized culture, experience, etc., and said:

Comrade Stalin sent us to China in order to bring out the Chinese comrades as soon as possible. Far away from our hometowns and relatives, we have overcome all kinds of difficulties in our work and life in order to accomplish the glorious tasks assigned by Comrade Stalin and to rapidly develop and strengthen the Chinese Air Force of the big socialist family. ”

Liu Maogong told the adviser through an interpreter: "We sincerely thank the Soviet big brother for his help. ”

However, the growth and strength of the Chinese Air Force must not rely solely on a small number of former Kuomintang insurgents, but must also rely on a large number of experienced PLA cadres who have withstood the test of war. ”

What you are doing is inconsistent with the intentions of Comrade Stalin and the CPSU to aid China. “

If the words are not speculative, the consultant will get angry, he will not know what to shout, and the translator will not dare to translate. Liu Maogong suppressed his anger and left the office with the list.

The next morning, the president's adviser apologized to Liu Maogong: "Comrade Political Commissar, your opinion is correct, and in the future, we should strive to train more combat backbones selected from the army. ”

In the winter of 1952, the higher authorities decided to move the Fourth Aviation School to Shijiazhuang, set up the Tenth Aviation School on the site of the Fourth Aviation School in Taiyuan, and appointed Liu Maogong as the principal of the Tenth Aviation School.

Color photo of the 10th Aviation School in the 70s of the last century.

The 10th Aviation School had not yet been established, and in August 1953, the Air Force issued another order to transfer Liu Maogong to the 6th Air Division as a division commander.

Liu Maogong was transferred to the Air Force for just over three years, and he was transferred to three different posts, each of which did not last long, and he was very dissatisfied.

When Wang Bingzhang, deputy commander and chief of staff of the Air Force, asked him for a talk about his appointment, Liu Maogong said unceremoniously

You didn't let me learn to fly, and now you want me to be an air force commander, I don't have the ability. Let me go back to my old army. If you don't let me go back to my old army, then let me learn culture. ”

At this time, the Air Force set up a cultural school, and Liu Maogong insisted on studying at the cultural school.

A few days later, Wang Bingzhang asked Liu Maogong: "Don't go to any cultural school, let's go to Nanjing Military Academy to study!" ”

Liu Maogong was interested in going to school, but still insisted on attending a cultural school. Wang Bingzhang was unhappy: "Either go to Nanjing Military Academy, or go to the Sixth Air Division to take office." Go to a cultural school, don't approve! ”

Wang Bingzhang. At that time, Liu Maogong thought that the Nanjing Military Academy was run by the commander of the first army, and he could return to the army if he went. So he readily agreed.

When I reported to the Nanjing Military Academy, the comrade who received the cadre department took Liu Maogong's letter of introduction, looked at it, and said: "I will introduce you to the Air Force Department." After speaking, he sat down and forwarded a letter of introduction to Liu Maogong.

Liu Maogong was stunned for a moment, and hurriedly stopped him: "Comrade, don't write yet!" I'm here to learn the Army! "Because Liu Maogong didn't know that there was an Air Force Department here, he didn't make such ideological preparations.

The comrades of the cadre department did not raise their heads: "The cadets introduced by the Political Department of the Air Force are all admitted to the Air Force Department, how can you be an exception?" ”

Liu Maogong pointed out the letter of introduction and showed him: "There is no Ministry of Air Force on the letter of introduction!" I'm here to study the Army, and I'm asking to talk to the minister. ”

After listening to Liu Maogong's "reasons" and requirements, the cadre minister shook his head with a smile: "Those introduced by the Air Force will learn from the Air Force, and those introduced by the Navy will learn from the Navy, and there is no need to indicate in the letter of introduction." There is no precedent for not being able to change the branch of the military. ”

The former site of Nanjing Military Academy.

It seems that this "loophole" cannot be drilled, and Liu Maogong has no choice but to report to the Air Force.

Later, Liu Maogong learned that when the college was established at the end of 1950, it was going to be named "Chinese People's Liberation Army Army University".

Comrade ***, who was responsible for the preparations, suggested that the name be changed to the "Military Academy of the Chinese People's Liberation Army" because he considered setting up the Air Force Department and the Navy Department.

After graduating from the Nanjing Military Academy, Liu Maogong successively served as commander of the Third Air Force, director of the Kunming Command Post of the Air Force, and commander of the Air Force of the Nanjing Military Region and the Lanzhou Military Region, and was awarded the rank of major general in 1955.
