"Self-Control" by Kelly McGonigal
Introduction: This book is the most popular psychology course at Stanford University. The author, Professor McGonigal, draws on the latest insights from psychology, neuroscience and economics to create a course for Stanford's continuing education program called "The Science of Willpower," which those who have participated in the course say are "life-changing." This course is the foundation of this book.
Excerpt: My original intention is to hope that this class will benefit more people, whether their purpose is to quit smoking,** pay off debts, or be more competent parents. But I was still amazed when I saw the results of the course. At the end of the four-week course, 97% of the students reported a better understanding of their behavior, and 84% said that the methods taught in the class improved their willpower. At the end of the course, participants shared their experiences, including how to overcome 30 years of sweetness, how to finally hand in a tax refund**, how to stop yelling at children, and how to stick to a sports program. There is a general belief that they are in better shape and can make more informed choices. Teaching evaluations say that this course is life-changing. The students agreed that an understanding of the science of willpower would help them develop self-control and give them more energy to chase what matters most. Scientific insights are equally effective for abstinent alcoholics and internet addicts. Self-controlled strategies help people resist all sorts of things, such as chocolate, video games, shopping, and married co-workers. Students achieve personal goals through this class, such as running a marathon, starting a career, coping with the stress of unemployment and family conflicts, and a dreaded word quiz on Friday mornings.
