In the first phase of Huangpu, known as the "protégé of the Son of Heaven", the famous generals we are familiar with include Chen Geng, Zuo Quan and others on the CCP side, Hu Zongnan, Guan Linzheng, Du Yuming, Chen Mingren, Song Xilian, Zheng Dongguo and so on the Kuomintang side. But there is a first-term student named Huang Jie, who is not so well-known, but he is also an out-and-out confidant of Chiang Kai-shek, and he is one of the few Whampoa students who can be valued by Chiang Kai-shek all his life.
Huang Jie was admitted to the first phase of Whampoa at the age of 21, and Chiang Kai-shek's evaluation of him was "simple and rigorous". But an incident happened later that changed Chiang Kai-shek's view of Huang Jie, and it really moved Chiang Kai-shek.
This is in the world-famous Whampoa Military Academy, it is the lunch break, the huge Huangpu Island is almost invisible to see people, even the birds can not withstand the scorching sun and hide in the shade of the trees. Principal Chiang Kai-shek dressed neatly and made his usual rounds of the campus.
As soon as he had walked around the campus for half a circle, Chiang Kai-shek's face was covered with dark clouds, and he was very dissatisfied with the situation at several sentry posts manned by Whampoa students. Most of the student soldiers at the sentry post were listless, and there was no standing face, let alone military appearance and discipline, and there were even those who left the sentry post and hid in the shade.
Chiang Kai-shek was angry and ordered their captain to run over and be trained together: "It seems that you can't bear to be tired like this, how can you get on the battlefield, and how can you be a revolutionary soldier!" ”
After venting his anger, Chiang Kai-shek continued to make his rounds, and as he approached the school gate, his eyes suddenly lit up, and a student soldier stood straight in the sun like a javelin, his neat uniform soaked with sweat.
When the student soldiers saw Principal Jiang approaching, they shook their spirits, quickly stood upright, saluted, their movements were powerful and clean, and their eyes were firm and clear. Chiang Kai-shek couldn't help but praise in his heart: This is the style that a revolutionary soldier should have.
Chiang Kai-shek was born in the military, and in those days in the Japanese non-commissioned officer school, he had received such harsh training, of course, he knew that it was hard, and in such a hot sun, it was not easy for the army to stand in a strict and upright position for several hours, which required perseverance and physique. He was very relieved that this student soldier in front of him could do this.
What's your name, how many brigades? Chiang Kai-shek actually had some impressions of him, and he always had the habit of talking to students, so as to get to know them and discover the seedlings he liked. But the student in front of him didn't make a deep impression on him, and he couldn't remember his last name. Of course, Chiang Kai-shek also had a time when he looked away, back then, he was through conversation, and he missed the **, Xu Xiangqian (**, who later made him regretful
Report to the principal, the student is Huang Jie, a student of the three teams! Huang Jie replied loudly.
Chiang Kai-shek nodded with satisfaction, and was about to turn away, but the eye found that there was a blood stain on the left side of Huang Jie's military pants.
Huang Jie hurriedly explained: "Report to the principal, students are worried about making sleepy mistakes on the job, so when they are sleepy, they use a thumbtack to tie their thighs to stay awake!" ”
Chiang Kai-shek did not say anything further and left satisfied. But this scene made Chiang Kai-shek firmly remember Huang Jie. Chiang Kai-shek is a detail-oriented person, firmly believe in "see the big with the small, see the small to know", Huang Jie's subtle performance, let Chiang Kai-shek see the tenacious side of his scholarly appearance, he believes that Huang Jie will be responsible, perseverance, and able to take on talents in the future. It only needs to be tempered, and it can be of great use.
With the favor of President Jiang, Huang Jie began to hand in good luck. At the time of graduation assignment, Huang Jie was assigned to the military academy teaching regiment as a reconnaissance platoon commander, and after the Second Eastern Crusade, Huang Jie was directly promoted to the position of battalion commander. During the Northern Expedition, he was assigned to He Yingqin's Eastern Route Army and was wounded in the Battle of Songkou. After returning from injury, he participated in the Battle of Longtan, and by the time of the second phase of the Northern Expedition, he was already the commander of the 7th Regiment of the 2nd Division. That is, when he was the head of the regiment, Huang Jie moved Chiang Kai-shek again.
During the Jinan Incident, the main force of the Second Northern Expedition went north along the Jinpu Road, and defeated Zhang Zongchang and entered Jinan City on May 1, 1928. The next day, Chiang Kai-shek set up the headquarters in the Shandong Governor's Office.
Just when Chiang Kai-shek was about to relax, he received a report that a large number of Japanese troops had stopped in front of Jinan City, and the artillery with their armor lifted was erected under the city wall, and the armored vehicles were even more rampant, and the smell of war was already strong and pungent.
At this time, the Japanese army was already unscrupulous, indiscriminately killing innocents in the city of Jinan, there was nothing they did not dare to do, Chiang Kai-shek thought that he was not the opponent of the Japanese, and strictly ordered the troops not to return fire at the Japanese. Suddenly, the city of Jinan was even more chaotic, the squadron was driven by the Japanese army, and the chaos was not formed, Chiang Kai-shek felt that danger would come at any time, and immediately decided to evacuate Jinan City.
However, at this time, the Japanese army had already occupied the pass of Jinan, and the guards around Chiang Kai-shek were very weak and could not resist the fierce attack of the Japanese army at all. Just when Chiang Kai-shek was at a loss, Huang Jie led a team of elite soldiers to "fall from the sky" and miraculously appeared in front of him. It turned out that Huang Jie had just received the news that the headquarters was in danger, and immediately led a small group of troops to rush over to escort him.
Chiang Kai-shek was overjoyed, and before he could praise a few words, Huang Jie invited Chiang Kai-shek to get on the only war horse, and withdrew just before the Japanese army was about to attack the headquarters.
Along the way, Chiang Kai-shek beat his horse and galloped, which made it difficult for the headquarters guards and Huang Jie to escort the soldiers, they could only rush forward desperately on two legs, and they had to prevent a sudden attack by the Japanese army on the way, Chiang Kai-shek immediately heard Huang Jie shouting behind him: "Keep up with the commander-in-chief, you must not fall behind!" Kill the violators! ”
Chiang Kai-shek rode a war horse all the way and ran out of Jinan City in one breath, the war horse had run out of sweat, and the coat color changed from the original light brown to reddish-brown, Chiang Kai-shek took a breath, turned back from the horse, but did not see a personal guard of his own, only Huang Jie panted and followed the horse with a pale face, behind Huang Jie, none of the soldiers he brought were left behind, they had not yet gained a firm foothold, but they had already arranged a cordon around under Huang Jie's order, they were like facing the enemy, the muzzle was outside, It's just that they're still panting there.
Chiang Kai-shek gave Huang Jie a "perfect score" in his heart, and it can be seen from the performance of these soldiers just now that Huang Jie is really a good leader of the troops.
The General Headquarters was forced to withdraw to the party's house. This night, Chiang Kai-shek tossed and turned and couldn't sleep, so he got out of bed, put on his coat and prepared to go out for a walk, but suddenly heard a movement outside the door, he was startled, stretched out his hand and took out a pistol, and saw a figure outside the window flashing by, and Huang Jie's voice came from outside the door: "Report to the principal, I am Huang Jie." ”
Chiang Kai-shek breathed a sigh of relief and inserted the pistol back into the holster: "It's Huang Jie, come in." ”
Be! Huang Jie pushed the door into the room, stood upright, and saluted: "Principal, the students are worried about the safety of the headquarters, so they have set up two posts on the periphery, and I have added another post outside the principal's dormitory, and I am responsible for guarding it." ”
Chiang Kai-shek looked Huang Jie up and down, and saw Huang Jie, who had the rank of lieutenant colonel, standing with a gun, although it was the middle of the night, and after such a violent long-distance run during the day, he could not see that he was a little tired, and his spirit was like a leopard ready to pounce on his prey at any time. Chiang Kai-shek couldn't help but be moved.
With such a loyal and courageous student, Chiang Kai-shek naturally had to entrust him with an important task. In 1929, Huang Jie was promoted to major general and brigade commander of the 5th Brigade of the 2nd Division, and the following year, Huang Jie participated in the Central Plains War with Chiang Kai-shek.
I don't know if God favors Huang Jie in particular, or God wants to deliberately torture Chiang Kai-shek, late at night on July 11, Yan Xishan suddenly sent troops to launch a sneak attack, breaking through Chiang Kai-shek's defense line, and the sword pointed directly at Chiang Kai-shek's command post at Liuhe Station. It was Huang Jie who led the three regiments under his command to rush to the rescue, successfully recovering the defensive line and protecting Chiang Kai-shek.
Later generations often say that Chiang Kai-shek's life was surprisingly good, and he had suffered many catastrophes, but he was always able to turn evil into good fortune. In the past, Chen Geng withdrew from the firing line with him on his back, and then Jiang Feng and Han Liancheng rescued him from danger at the train command post, and now Jiang Yan and Huang Jie risked their lives to save him. Counting the time in Jinan, Huang Jie successfully rescued the car twice in a row, which made Chiang Kai-shek particularly moved.
In this way, Huang Jie indisputably became Chiang Kai-shek's confidant, and Huang Jie always lived up to expectations, but whenever Chiang Kai-shek assigned, Huang Jie could always do it stably and properly, Chiang Kai-shek was even more at ease with him, and Huang Jie has been on the rise since then.
In 1932, Huang Jie stood out from a large group of Whampoa classmates and succeeded the defeated Tang Enbo as the commander of the 2nd Division of the Army. This 2nd Division is the old foundation of Whampoa, the real Whampoa soldiers, Liu Zhi, Gu Zhutong and other heavyweights all came out of this division, Huang Jie can become the commander of this division, which shows that his status in Chiang Kai-shek's mind is no longer "the same day" as in the past.
It is said that Hu Zongnan is the first person to be the "protégé of the Son of Heaven", and Huang Jie can be regarded as the second person that Chiang Kai-shek admires the most.
From 1933, Huang Jie led the 2nd Division to the north to resist the Japanese, participated in the famous Great Wall War of Resistance, and the invading Japanese army fought fiercely for 5 days and nights, more than 3,000 officers and soldiers, in July 1935, Huang Jie was awarded the Blue Sky and White Sun Medal for his military exploits; In 1937, when the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression broke out, Huang Jie, who was training in the Lushan Officer Training Corps, was promoted to the commander of the 8th Army and the head of the tax police, and led his troops to participate in the Battle of Songhu and the Battle of Xuzhou.
Huang Jie also had a "bad luck" time, because he retreated in violation of the order in the Battle of Lanfeng, Huang Jie was removed from his post and investigated. In September 1939, he was transferred to the director of the Education Department of the Chengdu ** Military Academy, and in May 1940, he was transferred to the 6th branch of the Guilin ** Military Academy, responsible for military education.
In April 1943, Huang Jie went out of the mountains again to lead the troops to fight, served as the deputy commander-in-chief of the 11th Group Army and the commander of the 6th Army, and the following year was incorporated into the battle sequence of the Chinese Expeditionary Force, and participated in the ** Battle of Western Yunnan, in September of the same year, he replaced Song Xilian as the commander-in-chief of the 11th Group Army, commanded 4 armies and 11 divisions, captured Longling in early November, and then captured Mangshi, Shafang, Wan Town, and crossed the border, entered Burma to continue the pursuit of the Japanese army, and on January 27, 1945, he joined forces with the Chinese army in India and the Allied forces in Mangyou.
Huang Jie's command of the ** Yunnan West Burma Campaign, after 8 months of bloody fighting, ended with **4At the cost of more than 80,000 people, it defeated the 56th Division of the Japanese invading army, opened up the international communication lines from China to Burma and India, and played an important role in winning material assistance from the Allies to China's War of Resistance. For his meritorious service in commanding the war against Japan, the United States awarded him the "Medal of Freedom" and the people awarded him the "Order of the Cloud Commander."
In March 1945, China and the United States jointly established the General Headquarters of the Chinese Army, and Huang Ming served as the deputy commander of the 1st Front Army and the deputy commander of the eastern section of the China-India Highway, and participated in and commanded the ** operation against Japan. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, he served as the chief of education of the National Training Corps and the chief of education of the Officer Training Corps.
After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, Huang Jie successively served as the deputy director of the Lieutenant General of the Changsha Pacification Office, the deputy director of the Lieutenant General of the Ministry of National Defense, and the commander of the 5th Army Training. After the Changsha Uprising of Cheng Qian and Chen Mingren in August 1949, he reorganized Hunan Province ** and served as the chairman of the provincial ** and the commander of the 1st Corps and the commander-in-chief of Hunan appeasement.
In December 1949, under the attack of the People's Liberation Army, Huang Jie led 30,000 horses to try to flee to Taiwan through Vietnam, but was disarmed by the French army and imprisoned for nearly 4 years. This experience of humiliation, pain, helplessness, and pathos made the experiencer unforgettable for life, and Huang Jie felt guilty for life.
After Huang Jie returned to Taiwan, he was known as the "Maritime Warrior", and in the chaotic years of rebellion, Chiang Kai-shek particularly appreciated Huang Jie's loyalty, and two months later, Huang Jie was appointed by Chiang Kai-shek as the commander of the Taipei Garrison Command, and was awarded the rank of second-class general of the army. In the following years, he was appointed as the "Commander-in-Chief of the Army" and the Commander of Taiwan's Defense, and the "Chief of Staff of the Government", becoming the No. 1 "guardian" of the island of Taiwan and his Chiang Kai-shek.
Compared with Huang Jie's Huangpu classmates, some of them withdrew from the military and political arena early, and some became prisoners of the People's Liberation Army.
He was Chiang Kai-shek's most outstanding "sentinel", from the immature student soldier who did not hesitate to use a thumbtack to tie his thigh in order to prevent sleepiness, to the regimental commander-level guard who stood guard for Chiang Kai-shek during the Great War of Chiang Kai-shek, and then to the No. 1 guardian of Taiwan Island later. Huang Jie, a "sentinel", has been a "sentinel" for a whole life.
