What are the evaluation criteria for museums?

Mondo Culture Updated on 2024-02-02

According to the "Interim Standards for Museum Evaluation" stipulated by the State Administration of Cultural Heritage, the evaluation and grading of museums is based on the comprehensive management and infrastructure of museums, collection management and scientific research, exhibition and social services, etc., and the museums are divided into three levels: first, second and first from high to low. Zhiye Cultural and Creative Construction Group summarized the evaluation criteria for museums, mainly including the following aspects:

1. Conditions for running a museum: including funds, personnel, housing, equipment, etc., which are the basis for the normal business of the museum.

2. Requirements for business work: including collections, displays, scientific research, personnel training, academic exchanges, publications, etc.

3. Requirements for scientific management: including computer management, the establishment of various work systems, statistical systems, etc.

4. Requirements for educational functions: Museums should be open to the public and have the conditions to provide services for audiences of different ages, occupations and cultural backgrounds.

In addition to the above four aspects, the State Administration of Cultural Heritage will also make appropriate adjustments and improvements to the standards according to the focus of the year. For example, in 2020, the evaluation criteria were mainly adjusted, and the protection of endangered works of art was added, emphasizing the importance of preventive protection and digital protection.

The specific evaluation criteria will vary slightly depending on the type of museum, such as comprehensive museums, history museums, natural science museums, etc. But in general, the grading criteria for museums are relatively strict.
