TSMC The United States deceived us?
TSMC is targeting the United States.
Due to the huge orders sent to TSMC by American customers, TSMC has always regarded the United States as a major sales channel. However, because the United States will not give subsidies to build a new chip factory, TSMC will have to pay higher construction costs. This move led to the postponement of TSMC's investment in two factories in the United States, which made TSMC feel powerless and frustrated.
However, TSMC must also face up to this fact. Back in 2020, TSMC was invited to set up a factory in the United States and signed a partnership contract with Huawei. Faced with the decline in orders from the mainland, TSMC wanted to better cooperate with customers in the United States, and at the same time received subsidies from the United States, so it decided to set up a factory in the United States. TSMC originally planned to invest $12 billion in a 5nm chip manufacturing base. 5 nanometers is currently the world's most cutting-edge technology, and the world's mainstream semiconductor products are currently using 5 nanometers, so TSMC's investment this time can be described as quite positive, and the United States is also quite happy about this project. Then, with the completion of TSMC's first semiconductor manufacturing base, TSMC also announced a new round of investment at the end of this year, and invested it to $4 billion, and will also add two new processes, 4nm and 2nm. TSMC is optimistic about the prospects of the United States, and Chairman Liu Deyin said that after the completion of the two new production bases, its annual sales revenue will reach 10 billion US dollars.
TSMC's tortuous journey into the United States.
However, years later, TSMC is not as good as expected in the US market. TSMC's current situation in the United States can be described as a "setback", and its situation is far more difficult than expected. The current TSMC is like a trap that has been carefully designed, and the United States has prepared a pit for them, waiting for them to jump into it.
According to the original plan, the first TSMC plant in the United States will be put into production in 2024, and another plant will be put into production in 2026. But now, things have taken a turn for the better, with one being postponed to 2025 and the other to 2027. Liu Deyin said that when TSMC sets up factories abroad, it will also decide whether to set up factories abroad according to the subsidies and support of local **. In other words, TSMC wants to build a factory in the United States unless the United States gives it adequate subsidies. Although the United States has introduced relevant policies, TSMC must get 75% of the profits in order to benefit the United States. In other words, TSMC only needs to pay 75% of the subsidy to the United States after receiving the profit. The United States can be said to want to exchange a small amount of subsidies for a huge market. In this case, TSMC can only sigh: the United States has made us "miserable".
TSMC has stopped providing subsidies to the United States for now, so we have to see how things develop before making a decision. In addition, in addition to the United States, TSMC has also launched a "spare tire plan", that is, to set up more chip factories in Japan and Taiwan. From 28nm to 3nm to 1nm, they're all planned. If there is no factory in the United States, then TSMC's future will be unlimited, and even the future direction will become more free. TSMC is not limited to the United States, but has a huge influence around the world. The primary issue facing TSMC is to continue to seek new growth opportunities in an uncertain economic situation.
Brief summary. TSMC once had great prospects in the U.S. market, but now, it has encountered a series of difficulties and setbacks. When it comes to building factories in the United States, the lack of subsidies becomes a big problem, and they have to share these additional benefits with the United States. As a result, TSMC's project to set up a factory in the United States was delayed and suffered losses. However, TSMC did not stop there, but continued to invest and deploy in other regions to maintain its competitive advantage and growth space. Although the current situation is still uncertain, TSMC is still optimistic about the future, and firmly believes that through unremitting struggle and innovation, more opportunities and breakthroughs can be found. In the face of the increasingly fierce international chip industry, TSMC must continue to understand and adapt, and adopt a more forward-looking vision and strategy in order to continue to grow in the future.
