Some people create history, some people record history, and we inherit history!
Why is "The Past Not Like Smoke"?
Because history does not allow it; Because we have been; Because it's worth remembering.
It is a resolute commitment to carry forward the past and forge ahead into the future.
The red and gray spirit is never just a symbol, it is a vivid person and story, and my generation draws strength from here and then sets off!
On the afternoon of 27 January 2024, alumni representatives from the Guangzhou Alumni Association and the Shenzhen Alumni Association of Lingnan College braved the drizzle to visit the home of Mr. Chen Yuxian, a veteran Lingnan alumnus of the High School Affiliated to South China Normal University, and expressed their best wishes for health and happiness to Mr. Chen's family. Mr. Chen, who is in good spirits, also expressed his gratitude and blessings to me and other junior alumni. The fourth daughter of Mr Chen Xujing, former President of Lingnan University, Chan Yu-sin studied at Lingnan Primary School as a teenager and retired as a senior history teacher at the High School Affiliated to China Normal University. Principal Chen Xujing named his children from their birthplaces: the eldest son Chen Qijin was born in Tianjin, the eldest daughter Chen Manxian was born in Germany and named "German", and Chen Suixian, **Xian, and Chen Yuxian were born in Guangzhou, Yunnan and Chongqing respectively.
On the coffee table at Ms. Chen Yuxian's house, there are two small books: one is for the nanny to buy groceries and keep accounts, and the other is to write messages for visiting Lingnan alumni and her couple's students.
During the conversation, Mr. Chen proposed to ask the five alumni representatives to write their messages on the notebook of the coffee table. Everyone readily agreed, scrambling to leave "Mobao" in the notebook, and one alumnus was so excited that he mistakenly wrote it in the book of Mr. Chen's nanny's grocery shopping book, which caused a burst of laughter in the room.
After talking, we found that this message book is not only a record, but also carries Mr. Chen's delicate care and affection for each alumni and students. Long before the representatives of the alumni association came to visit, Ms Chen Yuxian told the delegates to bring her the emblem of Lingnan College as much as possible. And as soon as she got the Lingnan Academy emblem, she immediately wore it on a pale yellow silk scarf. In the group photo, she especially proudly highlighted the hospital emblem on her chest.
In addition to the emblem, the Guangzhou and Shenzhen Alumni Associations prepared special gifts for Mr. and Mrs. Chen, and Ms. Li Huiwen of the Guangzhou Alumni Association of Lingnan Institute also presented the word "Fu" written by herself, which means that Mr. and Mrs. Chen are blessed with a long life and shoulder-to-shoulder pine and cypress.
In the course of the exchange, Mr. Chen asked each of us with great interest about their names, places of origin, and which Lingnan classmates they were. When she learned that we were in a certain class of Lingyuan, she would immediately say a few names and say, "Do you know how many of them?" They are in the same class as you in Lingyuan. Even, when she learned about our occupations, she would immediately say the names of some people and say, "Do you know them?" They're supposed to be colleagues. We were all amazed by Mr. Chen's accurate memory and quick thinking, and we also admired the power of the notebook that recorded the messages of many alumni and classmates. However, we gradually realized that all this is more important because of Mr. Chen's intentions. For Ms. Chen Yuxian, "Lingnan people" is not just a concept, but a living individual, a name that she can call casually, and a Lingnan student who adheres to the school motto of "Cultivating Talents and Serving the Society". She will proudly talk about Zhu Ying, who loves to dance, and will talk about her old friend Duanmumei, and she will also mention her husband Zhou Ren's classmate Zhong Nanshan. It's not just the Lingnan people who are worried about it, but also the students she and her husband, Zhou Ren, teach. The second elder has long been "full of peaches and plums" - this does not just refer to a large peach and plum forest, but a number of peach and plum fruits with names and surnames, because they will use a notebook to record the bits and pieces of the students' stories. Confucius asked three times what "benevolence" was, and Confucius once gave the most concise and powerful answer was "love people". The modern understanding of "benevolence and love" is to love others. Chen Yuxian and her husband, Teacher Zhou Ren, are both educators who teach and solve doubts. They can remember the wonderful and different characteristics and stories of each student, which shows that this is the simple love of the second elder to the students from the bottom of his heart. Loving others is a valuable ability, and the selfless "love for others" gene of Mr. and Mrs. Chen Yuxian comes from the torch of their parents' dedication to education.
Chen Yuxian's father, Principal Chen Xujing, was a well-known educator, historian, sociologist, and ethnologist. In the nearly four years from 1 August 1948 when Chen Xujing became President of Lingnan University to the summer of 1952, Lingnan University went from being the best school in Guangdong (there were only two universities in Guangdong at that time, the other being Sun Yat-sen University) to the most complete university in China. With such achievements in such a short period of time and in such a turbulent social environment, Principal Chen Xujing has created a miracle in the field of education.
How did the miracle happen? In his first speech to all teachers and students at the university, Chen Xujing emphasized that academic research does not discriminate between sects, "pays attention to the spirit of free discussion", and advocates respect for individual freedom of thought, belief, speech and scholarship. Based on this purpose, Chen Xujing invited a large number of well-known scholars, experts and professors at home and abroad, including historian Chen Yinke, mathematician Jiang Lifu, linguist Wang Li, paleographer Rong Geng, doctor of law Duanmuzheng and so on. All this is due to President Chen's "personal charm": he is rigorous in his studies, treats people with sincerity, is generous and elegant, and loves and cherishes talents. Mr Zhou Shoukai, Zhou Ren's father, is a well-known physician and medical educator, and was the dean of the Faculty of Medicine of Lingnan University. Zhou Ren's mother, Ms. Huang Xuan, served as an assistant to Chen Yinke, a master of Chinese studies, and assisted Chen in writing works such as "On the Fate of Rebirth", "Qian Liu's Explanation of Karma Poems", and "Yuan Bai's Poetry Notes". Chen Yinke was blind and broke his leg in his later years, and could only be recorded orally by Huang Xuan, Chen Yinke once said: "All in all, I can still correct old manuscripts and write new articles, all with the help of Mr. Huang." If she hadn't helped me, I would have been a complete waste, and nothing would have been accomplished. The Lingnan red and gray spiritual banner held high by his parents was relayed and inherited by Chen Yuxian and his wife without hesitation, carrying forward the heart of fraternity and inspiring more classmates and teenagers to scold Fang Xuan and spread far and wide. In fact, in addition to the two small books on the coffee table, there is also a small book in the heart of Teacher Chen Yuxian - this book records the influence and encouragement of her parents, records her childlike memories in Lingnan Kangyuan Park when she was a child, records her farm labor career in Changsha, Dongting Lake, Hainan and other places in the second year of college, records her life with Zhou Ren teacher raising eyebrows and getting along with each other, records her comfortable retirement life of evergreen pines and cypresses, and records the filial piety, tenacity, and Progressive growth footprint. A cloud of the times may fall on the head of an individual, it may be rain or snow. Mr. Chen's life story contains the gray line of the grass snake in the vicissitudes of the times. Listening to Mr. Chen Yuxian's eloquent talk about people and things, we read Mr. Chen's three small books: one is about firewood, rice, oil and salt, one is about benevolence and love, and one is about hope is always in all things - hope is the most beautiful. In the evening, the alumni representatives said goodbye to Mr. Chen Yuxian. Mr. Chen presented each of them with a book about the life of President Chen Xujing, as well as a specialty of Fujian hometown, tangerine peel plum gummies, and said warmly: "Welcome to come often, my home is a Lingnan alumni association." ”
Should Lingnan be bad? But he said, this place of peace is my hometown. Su Shi Cheng is not bullied. Carrying bags of sweet "blessings" from Mr. Chen's house, we want to say: This heart belongs to Lingnan.
