Recently, Sony released a new software update that enables Mocopi to run on PCs through a partnership with Slimevr.
It is understood that Mocopi is a portable motion capture device consisting of 6 tracking sensors and a dedicated smartphone app (supporting iOS Android) for $450, which was launched in Japan at the end of 2022 and landed in the United States last year. It works without a PC and can be used even outdoors. Its tracking sensor has a diameter of 32 cm and weight 8g. To use the sensor, the sensor should be worn on the head, wrists of both hands, waist and ankles of both feet.
Each *** on Mocopi has an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that contains a miniature accelerometer and gyroscope. This data is fed into a skeletal model to generate a reasonable full-body pose estimate based on the data for each ***. IMU-based systems require calibration on a per-user basis, are prone to drift, and don't provide the same quality as real location tracking systems like the SteamVR "Lighthouse". However, the advantage is that they do not require a base station and are very compact.
**Communicates via Bluetooth with the required Mocopi smartphone app, which previously only supported data to VRCHAT on Meta Quest.
SlimEVR has launched its own IMU** and has a PC application to manage communication with it. With this design, the Mocopi mobile app can now transfer Mocopi data to the SlimEVR PC app and then to VRCHAT.
