The legend of the Yuelong River

Mondo Culture Updated on 2024-02-01

Yuelong River, located in Shouguang City, Shandong Province, originates from Hetou Village in the southwest corner of Shouguang County, stretches all the way to the north, passes through about 20 villages, flows from the east of Yuanjiaqiao Village to the north and then to the west, flows through Liujiaqiao, Jijiaqiaozi, and finally flows into Judian Lake in the northwest corner of Niutou Village, which is an important river in Shouguang.

In the past, the Yuelong River, with its gurgling water and beautiful fish and water, nourished the villages on both sides of the river, and also made a significant contribution to the irrigation and drainage of the villages on both sides.

Later, the water level began to decline, coupled with the drought and lack of rain for many years, the Yuelong River was once neglected and despised by people, and the perennial drought and lack of water made people ignore its existence value, so that the river channel in many places was cut off and filled. The Yuelong River once became a dead river.

Just the year before, the sudden heavy rain for several days, due to the blockage of the Yuelong River, caused serious flooding disasters to the villagers on both sides of the river, and many greenhouses were flooded.

Afterwards, the Shouguang Municipal Party Committee and the Municipal Government ordered: clean up the river and strengthen the construction of water conservancy facilities, so a vigorous river management work was in full swing, the original river channel that was filled in was dug up, the digging should be dug, the repair should be repaired, and the reinforced concrete bridges sprung up on the river like mushrooms after a rain. The river has widened, the river has deepened, and the flood discharge capacity has been significantly improved.

Today's Yuelong River, although it is not as fertile and beautiful as it once was, its flood discharge capacity has been significantly improved. Over the years, after several river channel transformations, today's Yuelong River has long lost its original appearance, the previous meandering river channel has been modified to have more drainage function, and the end of the river channel no longer meanders into Judian Lake, but is diverted, from Yuanjiaqiao Village all the way north to the north in Taiping Village to join the Zhangseng River, and then all the way north, to Laizhou Bay, into the Bohai Sea.

Speaking of the origin of the Yuelong River, there is a beautiful legend:

A long, long time ago, in the north of our Shouguang, there were some villages scattered sparsely, people made a living from farming, in those days, people still relied on the sky to eat, and when the rain was reconciled, the harvest would be better, and the wind was not adjusted, the rain was not smooth, and there was no harvest in the event of drought and lack of rain or floods.

One year, a catastrophe fell from the sky, and the continuous torrential rain began to fall endlessly, and the crops that were about to be harvested were about to be destroyed in the flood, at this time, the dragon fell from the sky in the west of Hetou Village, and saw the dragon withstanding the torrential rain, swinging its tail, all the way to the north, like a sharp arrow, wading out of a river, and those floods rushed down the river ......

The giant dragon ran all the way to today's Judian Lake, in order to create a good place for people to discharge floods and store water, in that barren place, it used all its strength, rolled over and over, swim and climb, and finally created a lake with a radius of dozens of kilometers - Judian Lake ......

The dragon has finally completed its mission, and it is gone!

The flood was gone, and the people's crops were saved!

Since then, there has been an extra river on the ground - the Yuelong River!

In the following days, every time it rains, the river will follow the river channel of the giant dragon - Yuelong River, all the way to the north, down the trend, over time, Yuelong River has become a life-saving river for villages along the river, the mother river, protecting the safety of people along the way.

In order to commemorate and be grateful to the dragon, people simply named the river - Yuelong River.

Legends are just legends, it's not history!

However, in the legend, it carries people's yearning for a better life and the awe of truth, goodness and beauty.

Hopefully, we can live in harmony with nature, protect the environment, revere nature, and jointly create a harmonious, healthy and beautiful living environment!

May the people in the world be free from disasters and difficulties, happy and healthy!
