David Moyes and West Ham know they desperately need a win when they head off on Saturday. Although the London club remains eighth in the Premier League table, the Hammers have picked up just three points in their last five matches. Following a heavy 6-0 defeat to Arsenal at the weekend, there have been reports that the club may now be reconsidering whether to give Moyes a new contract extension at the end of the season.
The 60-year-old coach has been the head coach of West Ham United since December 2019, during which time David Moyes led the team to 16th, 6th, 7th and 14th finishes in the English top flight, as well as winning the UEFA Conference Cup last season. It was West Ham's first major trophy since 1980 and the first European trophy in 58 years. In many ways, David Moyes has established himself as perhaps the most successful manager in the club's modern history.
David Moyes has managed more than 210 games in charge of West Ham United to date, averaging an impressive 157 credits. That figure puts the Scotsman ahead of the club's last four full-time managers, with Sam Aledas winning with 1It was followed with 43 points. In fact, when we expanded the list to all West Ham managers since 2003 and looked at which managers were the best performers in the Premier League, Moyes also averaged 1. per gameThe 38-point finish ranks first, surpassing his previous seven full-time managers, and is further proof that he has taken West Ham United to new heights in the Premier League.
When we look at David Moyes' performances throughout the Premier League again, we can also clearly see his performances at West Ham United. For example, when we tally the best points per game average of any full-time manager who has managed more than 50 league games since David Moyes took over at West Ham, we find that the 60-year-old is 12th among his peers. At first, this may not be all that impressive, but when we consider that at least nine of the 11 coaches above him have worked in the top flight or finished in the top four, it underlines that David Moyes has established West Ham as a team capable of reaching the top half of the table, albeit slightly below the larger clubs in the league.
This becomes even clearer when we consider the money invested in the Premier League over the past four years. Since David Moyes took over at West Ham, the club's net expenditure on transfers currently stands at $2730 euros. While this may seem like a significant amount by overall European standards, in the Premier League, this is actually only the eighth place. This once again suggests that Moyes may be on track to achieve the goals he has asked for if the club's transfer budget is any one to go by.
