What are the five blessings

Mondo Culture Updated on 2024-02-21

In ancient China, people's yearning and pursuit of a happy life were often expressed through some specific concepts and symbols. "Five Blessings" is one of them, which condenses the expectations and ideals of the ancients for a better state of life.

The saying "Five Blessings" can be traced back to Huan Tan's "New Treatise and Confusion No. 13" in the Eastern Han Dynasty. It is clearly recorded in the book: "Five blessings: longevity, wealth, well-being, good virtue, and death." These five words, although concise, cover all aspects of people's lives.

First of all, "Shou" represents longevity, which is people's desire for the continuation of life. In ancient times, due to limited medical conditions, people's average life expectancy was relatively short, so longevity became a rare blessing. It means that a person can have more time to experience life, to enjoy family and friendship, and to realize their dreams.

Secondly, "wealth" represents wealth and material abundance. In ancient societies, wealth was not only a guarantee of life, but also a symbol of social status and dignity. Therefore, people often regard wealth as a blessing and hope to gain more wealth through their own efforts and wisdom.

Then there's "Corning," which refers to physical and mental health. Health is the cornerstone of a happy life, and only with a healthy body and a peaceful mind can people truly enjoy the beauty of life. As a result, Corning is also seen as an important blessing.

And "good virtue" emphasizes the importance of morality. In ancient times, people paid great attention to moral cultivation and the improvement of the spiritual realm. They believe that a person's high moral character and moral purity are a rare blessing. Because such a character can not only win the respect and trust of others, but also keep oneself resilient and optimistic in the face of difficulties and challenges.

Finally, "test life" refers to a good death, that is, the successful conclusion of life. In ancient times, it was believed that it was a rare blessing for a person to be able to maintain a calm and serene state of mind when they were dying. This is not only an affirmation of my life's experience, but also the best farewell to my family and society.

In general, "Wufu" is not only a specific description and yearning for a happy life in ancient times, but also an important embodiment of their life philosophy and values. It tells us that true happiness is comprehensive and multidimensional, and it encompasses many aspects such as the length of life, material abundance, physical and mental health, noble character, and the full conclusion of life.
