Finance Associated Press, January 10 (edited by Xiaoxiang).Advances in artificial intelligence (AI) could facilitate such crimes by lowering the technical barriers needed to carry out hacking, fraud and money laundering, U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies said Tuesday.

Rob Joyce, director of cybersecurity at the U.S. *** Bureau, said at the International Cybersecurity Conference at Fordham University that those who may not have the technical skills themselves may now be using AI guidance to carry out hacking operations that they could not do in the past.

Joyce said this would make criminals who use AI more efficient and dangerous.

On the flip side, he added, advances in AI could also help U.S. authorities detect malicious activity.

James Smith, assistant director of the FBI's New York bureau, also said at the conference that the FBI has observed an increase in cyber intrusions because AI has lowered the technical barriers to implementing cyber intrusions.

Fueling financial crime

At the International Cybersecurity Conference, two senior U.S. federal prosecutors also pointed out that AI may stimulate the breeding of some financial crimes.

Damian Williams, the U.S. attorney for the U.S. District of Manhattan, said that artificial intelligence could help people who did not speak English, generate believable-sounding messages in an attempt to scam potential victims of their money.

Brooklyn District Attorney Breon Peace pointed out that AI-generated "deepfake" images and** could be used to deceive banks' security systems designed to verify customer identities to prevent money laundering.

"This, in turn, would allow criminals and *** to open accounts on a large scale, disrupting the control systems that we've developed over the past few decades." ”

In fact, in the past year or so, with the improvement of people's understanding of AI technology and the wide promotion of its application, cases of AI technology being used by criminals are becoming more and more frequent, which has aroused great attention from many countries around the world.

AI crime methods are often more sophisticated and difficult to identify than traditional methods, which increases the difficulty of anti-crime. The emergence and popularity of generative AI is also complicating the cybersecurity landscape.
