Nitrogen Silicon Technology has launched a 65W GaN fast charging reference design, which has a 2C1A output interface, and any USB-C port supports 65W fast charging output. This reference design uses Nitrosilicon's latest GaN integrated controller chip, DXP8001FA, which integrates GaN HEMs and controllers to greatly reduce the difficulty of circuit design and debugging.

At the same time, the chip also supports a wide supply voltage range, which meets the output voltage range of PD fast charging, and does not require additional components for power supply, further simplifying the peripheral circuit. The following charging head network will bring the analysis of the 65W gallium nitride integrated fast charging solution of Nitrogen Silicon Technology, let's take a look at the design of this solution.

The Nitrosilicon Technology 65W reference design has a small board on the side.

The side board is welded with the rectifier bridge and synchronous rectifier circuit, and a small board is also welded on the output side to weld the USB-C output receptacle.

The length of the PCBA module measured by vernier calipers is about 538mm。

The width is about 483mm。

The thickness is about 24mm.

The measured reference design weight is approximately 65g.

Power on the DEMO, and use the ChargerLab Power-Z KM003C to measure that the USB-C1 port supports FCP, SCP, AFC, QC30/4+、sfcp、pe2.0、pd3.0、pps、dcp、sam 2a、apple 2.4A charging protocol.

PDO packets show that the USB-C1 port also has 5V3A, 9V3A, 12V3A, 15V3A, and 20V325A five sets of fixed voltage ranges, and 33-11V5A set of PPS voltage ranges.

It was measured that the USB-C2 port is compatible with the same protocol as the USB-C1 port.

In addition, PDO packets are the same, and the output performance of the two USB-C ports is the same, and the power is supported by blind mating.

Finally, it was measured that the USB-A port supports FCP, SCP, AFC, QC30、sfcp、pe2.0、dcp、sam 2a、apple 2.4A charging protocol.

The front of the PCBA module is at a glance, the lower left corner is welded with the input fuse, the safety X2 capacitor, the bottom plate is welded with the NTC thermistor, and the common mode inductance. The high-voltage filter capacitor is welded on the upper left side, and the transformer is welded on the right side. The right side is welded to the output buck plate, the buck inductor and filter solid-state capacitor are welded on the small board, and the bottom plate is welded with a synchronous rectifier controller and a filtered solid-state capacitor.

The back of the PCBA module is soldered with a GaN integrated controller chip, two SMD Y capacitors and a feedback optocoupler. This reference design is 65W output power, with a fixed voltage output and a synchronous step-down circuit. Let's start with the inputs.

The input terminals of the PCBA module are at a glance, the left side is welded with high-voltage filter capacitors, the right side is welded with fuses, safety X2 capacitors and NTC thermistors.

The two wrmsb40m rectifier bridges at the input end are from Shenzhen World Industry, with specifications of 4A 1000V. The WRMSB40M is a flexible bridge with a soft recovery curve and smooth turn-off characteristics, which can reduce the junction capacitance of the diode and achieve very little harmonic oscillation.

A high-voltage filter capacitor is welded behind the small board of the rectifier bridge, which comes from Yongming.

The high-voltage filter capacitor is specified at 27 F400V.

Behind the input fuse is a differential mode inductor, insulated by a jacket of heat shrink tubing.

The other four filter capacitors have the same specifications, all of which are 27 F400V, and the total filter capacitor capacity is 135 F.

At the heart of this reference design is a GaN integrated controller IC, model number DXP8001FA, from Nitrosilicon Technology. The chip integrates a 650V 165M GaN switch and a high-frequency flyback controller for PD fast charging adapter applications. The chip supports a power supply voltage range of 9-85V, covering 33-21V output voltage eliminates the need for additional power supply windings and step-down circuitry.

The DXP8001FA adopts adaptive multi-mode control, supports DCM and QR modes, and supports burst mode to improve energy efficiency. The chip integrates a wealth of protection functions, including output over-voltage protection, power supply over-voltage protection, brown in out protection, and sampling resistor short-circuit protection.

The DXP8001FA adopts DFN8*8 package, which effectively reduces the temperature rise of the chip. By integrating GaN switches and controllers, the conversion efficiency, power density, reliability, and switching frequency are improved, the impact of parasitic parameters on the system is reduced, and the number of components is reduced, simplifying the design of fast charging sources.

It supports DCM, CCM, QR, ACF multiple working modes, supports high-side and low-side applications, and has ringing detection to prevent false opening.

The synchronous rectifier tube is from Wei'an, model WMB072N12LG2, NMOS withstand voltage 120V, conduction resistance 54M in a PDFN5060-8L package.

The output filter capacitor is covered with a red insulating sleeve.

The output terminal is welded with a step-down small board, and the small board is welded with a USB-C female connector, a synchronous step-down switch tube, and a solid-state capacitor is filtered.

The main control chip of the two step-down circuits adopts Zhirong SW3516H, which is used for step-down control and protocol identification. Zhirong SW3516H is a highly integrated multi-fast charging protocol dual-port charging chip, which supports fast charging output of any port of A+C port and independent current limit of dual ports.

The SW3516H integrates a 5A high-efficiency synchronous step-down converter. It supports multiple fast charging protocols such as PPS, PD, QC, AFC, FCP, SCP, PE, SFCP, etc., with a maximum output of PD 100W, CC CV mode, and dual-port management logic. Only a small number of peripheral components are needed to form a complete high-performance multi-fast charging protocol dual-port charging solution.

The other step-down protocol chip also uses Zhirong Technology SW3516H.

The two synchronous step-down switches are from Ruijun Semiconductor, model RUH4040M2, NMOS, withstand voltage 40V, conduction resistance of 8M, and use PDFN3333 package.

Two step-down inductors are insulated with heat shrink tubing.

The two filter capacitors are from Ruilong, with a specification of 220 F25V, and the two capacitors correspond to two outputs.

A filter capacitor of the same specification is also welded on the back of the small board.

The VBUS switch for USB-C2 and USB-A ports is from Ruijun Semiconductor, model RU30D20, which is a dual NMOS, withstand voltage of 30V, and conduction resistance of 85M in a PDFN3333 package.

The USB-C receptacle is fixed by via soldering, and the black rubber core does not expose copper.

The USB-A receptacle has a green rubber core and an auxiliary contact at the front.

Through the analysis of the reference design of the silicon nitrogen DXP8001FA GaN integrated controller chip, it is found that the switching power supply of this reference design uses only one chip, which replaces the design of the controller + GaN switch in the traditional GaN fast charging. The reference design uses the DSP8001FA GaN integrated controller chip, which is a flyback architecture with a fixed voltage output.

The output adopts two independent step-down circuits, using the SW3516H step-down protocol chip of Zhirong Technology, with an external switch tube and step-down inductor to achieve three-port fast charging. The PCBA module adopts three small plates combined welding, which disperses the heat source, reduces the temperature rise, and is convenient for heat dissipation design.
