The letter bottle thrown into the sea: to whom?

The philosopher Benjamin's later philosophical thought asked such a question when he described the purity of art. That is, art, as an independent carrier, does not appeal to rights, nor to politics, nor is it influenced by potential art criticism, but is a letter bottle thrown into the sea, not knowing whose hands it can reach, reflecting the authenticity of art.

Another manifestation of authenticity is what Benjamin calls now-time: an experience that breaks the homogeneous continuity of time. The essence of a work of art is reflected in the moment of creation, but also in the long-distance impact that occurs after transcending time. The immediacy of art is a combination of the ephemeral and the eternal. Just as we now look at the works in the vast art history, the history of the sea hooks and sinks, which is also a continuation of now-time. On the other hand, the art that is happening in the present becomes a kind of association with the future world after breaking the dimension of time.

A work of art contains the establishment of a world. (Martin Heidegger, The Road in the Woods, 1935) The establishment of this world is not a ready-made countable, or a simple combination of the familiar and the unfamiliar. Rather, it is a new, present and future, a synthesis of time and space. The pure authenticity of art, detached from the compromise with the social world, is a kind of disenchantment that retains self-discipline in the form of self-aesthetics. The immediacy of art, embodied in the present, is more like a test, and in the organic whole of global art, it is difficult not to be influenced by art history and art commerce, and how to maintain the purity of art itself. Now-time is more like an expectation proposed by Benjamin, and in the sequence of breaking time and space, art is more like an eternal moment at the end of the universe. The important task of the current development of art is that we transcend our understanding and cognition of artworks.

The 20th Century & Contemporary Art Sale of Duo Yun Xuan Shanghai Autumn Auction is presented with a "curatorial" mindset to open up the chronological sequence of time and space to select artworks that better reflect now-time. Exploring the history of global twentieth century and contemporary art, it uses art history as a clue to present the multi-dimensional development of art, focuses on the current avant-garde art with a forward-looking vision, and presents a gluttonous art banquet that takes into account academic professionalism and market value.

In the early twentieth century, artists pioneered and established the prelude to Western and Chinese modern art, and became a trend and inspiration, and were worthy of attention in both market and academic circles, providing a direction for the development of Chinese contemporary art. The Chinese art section of the "The Essence of the 20th Century Art" special exhibition features works by Zhou Bichu, Lin Dachuan, Meng Guang, Sha Qi, Hu Shanyu, Chen Junde, etc., with a complete structure and orderly inheritance, which have precious academic and documentary value, and are also popular masterpieces in the market.

Zhou Bichu is a pioneer of Chinese oil painting in the 20th century, he went to France in the 1920s to further his studies, deeply influenced by Impressionism, good at capturing the ever-changing colors in the natural scene, creating a unique artistic outlook with both Western and Oriental charm, and is a brilliant chapter in the history of modern Chinese art that cannot be ignored. After Zhou Bichu returned to China in 1959, he successively taught at the Hangzhou National Art School, the Shanghai Art College and the Shanghai Xinhua Art School, and contributed a lot to the training of future students.

Created in 1987, Lu You's Former Residence is the culmination of Zhou Bichu's artistic achievements in his later years. His works have been published and exhibited many times, and are treasured by his family. The work combines the hallmarks of Zhou Bichu's artistic career: the coordination of different levels of color, the sharp and neat pointillism brushstrokes, and the rhythmic sense of light and color, which fully embodies the artist's late research experience in Chinese landscape painting and his full grasp of the characteristics of oil paint materials in decades of practice. While using contrasting colors, more attention is paid to the expressiveness and vividness of the dot clusters of fine brushstrokes.

As a loyal practitioner of the old Shanghai Art College's motto of "Hong Yue Shen Mei" - Meng Guang, graduated from the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts founded by Mr. Liu Haisu and others in the 1940s, and after the founding of the People's Republic of China, he founded Meng Guang Studio at No. 77 Sinan Road, where he lived. Meng Guang has successively cultivated a large number of artistic talents such as Chen Yifei, Xia Baoyuan, Wei Jingshan, Huang Yinghao, Zhao Weiliang, and Chen Yiming. The works of Meng Guang created in the 80s are all from the collection of his family, and are the key works exhibited and promoted in the "Meng Guang Era: Teachers and Students Art Documentary Special Exhibition" held by Liu Haisu Art Museum this year.

Since the 2021 Spring Auction of Modern and Contemporary Art Yun S experimentally launched a special lot by artist Chen Junde, it has received wide attention from the industry and recognition from collectors. Subsequently, the Cloud Layer Project successively launched special sessions of Wang Jieyin's works, Luo Zhongli and Ma Ke's works, Geng Jianyi, Chen Juyuan, etc. This season's Cloud Project launched a special session of Ding Fang and Jia Difei's works. The two veteran artists' years of exploration and accumulation in the academic field constitute a stable art market, and the works in this auction are representative works of the artists in an important period.

As an important representative of the "85 New Wave Art", Ding Fang rose to prominence in the field of contemporary art in the 80s with his so-called "Great Soul Painting". So far, Ding Fang has been walking on the spiritual road of tracing his roots. Ding Fang advocated the organization of the "Red Brigade" group and became the representative of "rational painting", hoping to express his dissatisfaction with the real world and the exploration of the noble spirit of mankind with the sense of tragedy in his works.

Lot 2250 D-square (B..)1956) Eating Peasants, oil on canvas.

86×114cm

1984-1986.

Signature: (back) din

Note: It was confirmed as authentic by the artist on November 15, 2023.

Created in 1984-1986, The Eating Farmer was a bold attempt by Ding Fang to absorb the language of modern Western art and transform it. Just like Van Gogh's sense of social morality when creating "The Potato Eater", Ding Fang uses Luau-style rough brushstrokes, heavy tones and concise and concise figures to boldly express the artist's complex inner world. There is not only the sadness of Miller, but also the spiritual power of the times, and the whole seems simple, generous, noble and indifferent.
