Southern Medical University is a university.
Southern Medical University, formerly known as the First Military Medical University, was established in 1951 and renamed Southern Medical University after the overall transfer to Guangdong Province in August 2004. Although it does not belong to the "985" or "211" engineering schools, its strength is quite recognized in the domestic medical community. The university has a number of national key disciplines and clinical pharmacology bases, as well as a number of first-level disciplines authorized for doctoral degrees. In addition, Southern Medical University is one of the first universities in China to offer an eight-year clinical medicine major, and it is also a pilot university for the excellent doctor education and training program.
The predecessor of the school is the First Military Medical University of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, founded in 1951, with a glorious military tradition and profound historical accumulation. The school covers eight fields: medicine, engineering, science, law, management, literature, education, and economics, and has a number of secondary colleges and 6 affiliated hospitals.
The school has an excellent teaching team including 3 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering, as well as a number of experts and scholars who enjoy special allowances. The university has established solid ties with universities or scientific research institutions in many countries and regions, and has made remarkable achievements in international cooperation in education and scientific research.
