During the reign of Liu Zhiyuan, the ancestor of the Later Han Dynasty, although he tried to revitalize the country, due to the instability of his rule and the intensification of internal contradictions, the Later Han regime gradually declined. After Liu Chengyou, the Yin Emperor of the Later Han Dynasty, succeeded to the throne, he exacerbated the internal contradictions and triggered a large-scale military rebellion. Eventually, the Later Han regime was destroyed by the Later Zhou Dynasty in the third year of Qianyou (950).
Liu Chong, as the younger brother of Gaozu of the Later Han Dynasty, chose to establish the Northern Han regime in Taiyuan after the fall of the Later Han Dynasty.
