Addis Ababa, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- The two-day 44th ordinary session of the Executive Council of the African Union (AU) opened at the African Union headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 14, focusing on issues such as regional peace and stability, education development, and the global multilateral system.

At the opening ceremony, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Faki, reviewed the achievements and problems of the first decade of the AU Agenda 2063 (2014-2023). He said the resurgence of military coups, pre- and post-election violence, war-related humanitarian crises and the effects of climate change seriously threaten the momentum of Africa's rise. As the AU enters its second decade of the agenda, member states need to work together to achieve the AU's development vision.

In his speech, the Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Clavel Gartet, stressed the importance of education for Africa's development and called for the reform of Africa's education system, strengthening the digital transformation of vocational education and training and education systems, and developing talent to meet Africa's development needs.

The AU summit will be held on 17 and 18 February. The theme of the AU series of meetings is "Developing Africans Fit for the 21st Century: Building Resilient Education Systems in Africa with Access to Inclusive, Long-term, Quality and Realistic Learning Opportunities".
