Ulaanbaatar, Feb. 14 (Xinhua) -- Mongolia's ** Information Office reported on the 14th that since the beginning of winter in 2023, extremely cold, ice and snow weather has killed more than 500,000 livestock in Mongolia, and the country has entered a state of high alert for disaster prevention.

According to reports, since the beginning of winter, Mongolia's 21 provinces and the capital city of Ulaanbaatar have continued to experience rare extreme cold and snowstorm weather, more than 80% of the country's land area is still covered by heavy snow, and the snow thickness in many places has reached 100 cm.

According to incomplete statistics from relevant departments, as of February 14, a total of 508039 livestock in Mongolia had died due to extreme cold and snowstorms, among which the eastern provinces of Kent, Sukhbaatar, Eastern Province, East Gobi Province and the central and western provinces of Houhangai were seriously affected.

At the ** regular meeting held on the 14th, Mongolian Prime Minister Oyun Erden instructed relevant functional departments to take all necessary measures to provide assistance to herders in the disaster area and minimize the loss of animal husbandry.

According to data released by the National Statistics Committee of Mongolia, at the end of 2023, the number of livestock heads in the country was 64.7 million.
