The breast surgery team of the Second Sun Yat-sen Hospital (Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University) did have a number of doctoral students suffering from cancer.

According to the official report of Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University, three of the people who have worked and studied in the laboratory of the Breast Tumor Center in recent years have suffered from cancer, and two of them are breast surgeons in the hospital who are working in clinical practiceThe other 1 is not an employee or student of the hospital, but a person who has come to the hospital for further study from other places and has returned to his original unit to work. No students in the lab have developed cancer.

The specific cases are as follows:

Huang, female, studied for a doctorate degree in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from 2017 to 2022, studying in the laboratory of the Breast Tumor Center, and graduated from the Department of Breast Surgery of the hospital in July 2022, engaged in clinical work. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in October 2023 and underwent surgery and is currently in stable condition.

Mr. Liu, male, studied for a doctorate degree in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University from 2013 to 2018, where he studied in the laboratory of the Breast Tumor Center, and graduated from the Department of Breast Surgery of the hospital in August 2018 and engaged in clinical work. In June 2023, he was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma and underwent surgery, and recovered well after surgery.

In addition, one of the trainees is a doctoral student who graduated from a foreign hospital. In 2021, he went to Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University for one year of study, worked in the laboratory of the Breast Tumor Center, and left Guangzhou after completing his training in April 2022, and was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023.

While there have been reports of possible involvement with the experimental environment and reagents, there is no definitive evidence for this at this time. The hospital also said that since its opening in 2009, the breast tumor central laboratory has been strictly in accordance with the norms and unified management, and all experimenters have carried out pre-experimental safety and standardized operation training.

Overall, this is a matter of concern, and more research and investigation is needed to determine what is possible** in order to take appropriate precautions.
