IT Home reported on February 21 that a few weeks ago, Microsoft officially announced that Windows 11 version 24H2 will be launched as a major feature update in the second half of this year. Although the technical code name "24H2" is officially used, Microsoft will definitely come up with a more marketable name. Now, it seems that the mystery is about to be revealed.
IT Home noticed that Microsoft has updated the "Flight Hub" page, an official page that tracks Windows Insider Previews and covers all major Windows releases, from the Windows 10 Anniversary Update to Windows 11, version 24H2. Like the previous two major Windows 11 updates, this year's update will also have a clear and concise name – Windows 11 2024 Update.
While "Windows 11 2024 Update" doesn't sound like "Windows 11."3" is easy to remember, but it's a fitting name considering that Windows now only gets a major feature update once a year. Microsoft also releases "moment" updates, but they are usually smaller and not as large as annual releases.
However, there is still some confusion about how Microsoft names it. Users will hardly be able to find any mention of "Windows 11 2023 Update" in Windows 11, version 23H2. System settings, winver commands, and other system sections all only show the version number 23H2 instead of its market name "Windows 11 2023 Update", not to mention something like a "Moment" update.
"2024 Update" may not be the best marketing name, but it's still a lot better than the "Windows 10 Fall Creators Update" that used to be. The Windows 11 2024 update, which is expected to be released this fall, has a primary focus on artificial intelligence and will bring new features to PCs with dedicated neural processing units. Before that, Microsoft will also release a small feature update for Windows 11, "Moment 5", later this month.
