The response comes on the heels of Johnson's statement that the House would reject a large bill in the bipartisan Senate that lawmakers have been studying for months.
Joe Biden of the United States has threatened to veto an independent aid package against Israel, the White House announced on Monday. The House Republican bill would provide $17.6 billion in aid to Israel, but would reject the bipartisan Senate border agreement that lawmakers have reached for months, which includes funding for Ukraine and the U.S.-Mexico border.
*It took months to work with a bipartisan group of senators to reach a *** agreement to secure the border and support the people of Ukraine and Israel, while also providing much-needed humanitarian assistance to civilians affected by conflicts around the world," the White House wrote in a statement.
On Saturday, House Speaker Mike Johnson said Republicans would introduce an Israel-only funding bill (HR 7217) to reject a larger bipartisan bill unveiled over the weekend. The bipartisan bill proposes to spend $118.3 billion, including $20 billion for border security, $60 billion for Ukraine, and $14.1 billion for Israel.
Rep. Ken Calvert (R-CA), who is responsible for H.R. 7217, reportedly said he was "dismayed" by Biden**'s statement.
The Representative wrote: ".I believe that there is broad partisan support for standing with Israel and supporting their actions to protect civilians from those responsible for the October 7 attacks.
The threat of veto is an act of betrayalJohnson added late Monday.
Since the outbreak of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Biden's approval ratings among young voters have plummeted. Nearly three-quarters of voters between the ages of 18 and 29 disapprove of U.S. support for Israel.
A recent poll showed that half of American adults believe Israel's military operation in Gaza is "too much." The same poll shows that only 31% of American adults approve of Biden's handling of the conflict, which has claimed the lives of nearly 27,500 Palestinians.
